SLICE OF LIFE :: Toronto Comic Arts Festival!

August 10, 2007 at 12:06 pm By: Dustin Harbin

Next weekend I’ll be attending this year’s Toronto Comic Art Festival, aptly located in Toronto, Ontario. I’ve been curious about this somewhat new convention for a while now; it has a hugely positive reputation among creators and the attending public (just like us), is run by a well-respected, pro-active comics store (us, too), and promotes appreciation of and participation in comics and the comics industry (that’s so us!). Their guest list isn’t too shabby either, including Darwyn Cooke, Paul Pope, James Jean, Chester Brown, Seth… et cetera. With any luck I’ll be bringing back some guest list announcements for HeroesCon; but I’ll definitely be up there promoting the show, hobnobbing, and generally trying not to embarass us in front of Canada, or pee myself while talking to Chester Brown. Wish me luck! For more info check out the TCAF site! Not to mention The Beguiling, the store that organizes the show–besides being a nice shop, they sell TONS of original art on their site.

Don’t forget your proof of citizenship! Take your birth certificate or your passport, because they may decide to reject you at the border. Especially with that devilish beard!

I’m going to trim it up this weekend to look a little less Al Qaeda. Do you think a copy of my birth certificate is okay?

    Phil Southern says:

A certified copy may be needed:

“The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced Friday, June 8, that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada… which require a passport, certified birth certificate, or other evidence of citizenship for entry.”

however, they let me in without either last September.

I think that secondary citizenship papers help. For instance, while an non-citizen can get a driver’s license, they can’t get a voter-registration card. I’ll just bring whatever I can find.

If (and by “if,” I mean “when,” hint, hint) you lock down Darwyn Cooke for the show, you will become the hero of many a Heroes staffer.

If one wants to know how I look when I barely get into Canada, please look to your right…

    Robert Ullman says:

If you’re driving, you should be okay without the passport…otherwise, ot might be worth checkin’ into in advance.

I’m jealous…if our l’il bundle of joy hadn’t come along this summer, I’dbe making my first trip to TCAF next weekend. Oh well, we’ll just make TCAF 2009 her first international vacation….and hopefully I’ll be there promoting a new book as well!

    Have fun!

Get off your duff, Ullman! You should be promoting a new book next year! Although it is curious that TCAF is only every two years. Very curious, indeed… Anything you want me to pick you up while I’m up there? Sheet music for “O, Canada”?

    Andy Mansell says:

If you are taking Tracy– do NOT introduce her to Dave sim– she would probably beat him up anyway…

    Dustin Harbin says:

Tracy’s staying at home this trip, Andy, although I suspect Dave Sim is more polite to women in person than he is in print. Hey–I’m an optimist!
