PROFESSOR ZYG FURMANIUK takes us all to school; the school motto:

Cum Real Scientia est magna Cura “With Real Science comes great Responsibility”

It wasn’t just lab accidents and adamantium – sometimes it was an actual gravitational free fall problem or a sulfur-selenium exchange reaction.  Whether the science was astoundingly correct or hilariously wrong it functioned as the gateway drug to careers in STEM for the generation that grew up and created personal computers and mapped the human genome.  We’ll keep the math to the minimum as we look at how chemistry and physics were depicted, the people behind it, and the comic book influences on Stephen Jay Gould, one of the most popular science writers of his day.

MEMOIRS in COMICS: I’ll Be My Mirror: The Philosophy and Practice of Memoir Comics.

JEFFREY BROWN, KAYLA E., NOAH VAN SCIVER  Moderator: Craig Fischer

What motivates an artist to make their life a central subject of their art? Does autobiography

allow a creator to revisit and reshape the past in order to achieve catharsis or closure? How does it feel to design a cartoon self-portrait, and then to draw and redraw hundreds of these self-portraits in the pages of a comic book or graphic novel? Is it ever unethical to borrow characters and situations from real life? These are just a few of the questions that moderator Craig Fischer will pose to three superlative autobiographical comics artists: Jeffrey Brown (Loved and Lost: A Relationship Trilogy), Kayla E. (Precious Rubbish), and Noah Van Sciver (Blammo, One Dirty Tree).

3:00pm

Room 205 Interview.

SHELTON DRUM and the 40th ANNIVERSARY of HEROESCON

Shelton Drum was a busy young man: he began buying and selling comics in the early 1970s,

started the Charlotte Mini-Con in 1977, and opened his first brick-and-mortar comic shop—the

first location of what would become Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find—in 1980. But another of his

signature achievements was the founding of the Heroes Convention in 1982, which turns forty

this year. Over the decades, HeroesCon has become one of the premiere comics events in the

United States, and Shelton has been at the center of it all, hearing the stories, bonding with

creators, dealers, and fans, and sometimes navigating the event through controversies and

difficulties, most recently its two-year Covid shutdown. Join Shelton and interviewer Craig

Fischer for an in-depth talk about the history (and future!) of HeroesCon, and bring your own

questions to ask Shelton too!

STAYING HEALTHY FOR THE HEROES CONVENTION :: MASKS RECOMMENDED IN STORE

May 20, 2022 By: Karla Southern Category: DISCUSS, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, NEWS, Now Read This!, Uncategorized

FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2021

HELP US MAKE IT TO HEROESCON!

We hope you are as excited as we are for the 40th Anniversary of the Heroes Convention, June 24 – 26 at the Charlotte Convention Center.

This year’s HeroesCon will be the largest we’ve ever hosted, and we look forward to seeing all of you there.

As we get closer to the event, we want to take a minute to talk about our store and convention covid safety recommendations.

Effective immediately, all store staff will be required to wear masks while in the store. We will not require customers to wear masks, but we kindly encourage all of our customers to wear them in the store right up through HeroesCon weekend. If you don’t have a mask, we will have some available. If you choose not to wear a mask in our store, we respect your choice, but ask that you practice social distancing around all other customers and staff. Covid numbers are unfortunately rising again in many places, including Charlotte. With many customers visiting our store each day from out of town, we want to ensure that everyone stays well.

While you may be familiar with our store and convention, you may not realize that we have a small, dedicated staff of seven employees, three of whom comprise the core HeroesCon management team. It is essential that our entire staff continues to work all the way through HeroesCon in order to make this the convention we’ve all been anticipating.  We know that wearing masks can be hot and uncomfortable, especially in the summer, but we appreciate your help in our efforts to keep everyone healthy and working.

As of now, we are not requiring masks or proof of vaccination in order to attend the Heroes Convention. However, as in our store, we encourage all attendees to wear masks at the convention, even if you are vaccinated. There will be tens of thousands of people from all over the world converging on the Charlotte Convention Center next month, and we want everyone to remain healthy.

Thank you for your support, and for helping us continue to make HeroesCon America’s Favorite Comic Convention.

Sincerely,

The staff of Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention

 ____

We encourage everyone to GET VACCINATED.
Here is a list of vaccination sites for the Charlotte and surrounding areas:

Atrium Health

Atrium Health Vaccination Events

CVS

Novant Health

Walgreens

Vaccine FAQ from the NCDHHS

CONTINUED SAFE SHOPPING GUIDELINES:

  • We will provide hand sanitizer for you to use upon entering and exiting the store.

  • Please be respectful of social distance and personal space while in our store.
That’s just common sense. Don’t crowd others while shopping, it’s creepy.

  • Staff will continue to sanitize and wash our hands as often as possible.

  • WE ASK THAT ANYONE WHO FEELS UNWELL TO PLEASE STAY HOME. (This includes our staff!)
That is ALSO good common sense. If you feel unwell, STAY HOME!

  • WE CAN SHIP!!
We can ship to anyone, anywhere! (Well, anywhere that USPS or UPS delivers…so maybe not SPACE??)

  • OUR HOURS:
    Monday-Tuesday & Thursday-Saturday: 10am-7pm

    Wednesday: 10am-9pm
    Sunday: 1pm-6pm

  • Please follow us on social media (FacebookInstagramTwitter) or sign up for our Newsletter for regular updates!
Please feel free to call us at 704-375-7462 or email us at HeroesArentHardToFind@gmail.com with any questions!

SATURDAY, MAY 7 :: 10AM-7PM

By now we hope you all know that the Fantastic 40th Anniversary of HeroesCon is right around the corner, June 24 – 26 at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Before we get to the HeroesCon festivities, we’ll be hosting Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7. The store will be open regular hours that day from 10am – 7pm. As with last year, we will have limited quantities available on the designated free comics.

If you are a reserve customer who would like to reserve any of these titles, please send an email to heroespulls@gmail.com by no later than Thursday, May 5.
We’ll do our best to fulfill each request, but please remember that quantities are very limited.

Everyone who comes into the store on that day will have the option of picking several different titles while supplies last. We’ll have staff on hand to help navigate the proceedings. As in years past, taking multiple copies of the same title will be prohibited. We’re happy to have Free Comic Book Day back in May again, but want to make sure we have comics for as many customers as possible.

As per the updated Mecklenburg County mandate, we will NOT be requiring masks in the store for this event.
We still encourage social distancing, which remains a nice, neighborly practice for all of us to observe. As in years past, we may also limit the number of people in the store at a given time. This is done in part to keep what will certainly be a warm day from becoming too uncomfortable for the customers in our store.

Because of our continued work on HeroesCon, we will NOT be hosting any artists at our Free Comic Book Day event this year.
Our tiny staff is hard at work bringing the HeroesCon back, and this year will be our largest one yet! With hundreds of incredible artists in attendance in June, we will be working right up to the show to make it the 40th Anniversary HeroesCon that you have all been waiting for.

Free Comic Book Day will be lots of fun for everyone, and a great way to kick off HeroesCon season!

As always, we appreciate your enthusiasm and continued support!
