staff_picks karla_staff_picksKARLA’S PICK :: IMAGINE AGENTS #2: I had quite the ensemble of beloved imaginary cohorts as I child, which is why when my fellow Heroes staffer (and Store Manager extraordinaire) Justin recommended Imagine Agents to me last month, I picked it up and devoured it! (Don’t be silly…I didn’t actually EAT the book, I’m not Tony Chu!) Imagine Agents is a new book from BOOM! Studios written by Brian Jones and illustrated by Bachan. It’s an intriguing concept about an organization of “Men In Black” style agents who’s job it is to wrangle up imaginary friends after the children they befriended have outgrown them(tragic!! Right??!!). Some of those imaginary counterparts are the best friends and confidants to the children they belong to, and others are chaotic terrors who reek havoc and mayhem wherever they go, leaving their pre-adolescent benefactors to take the blame. I truly enjoyed the heck out of issue #1 (which we still have in stock!) and can’t wait to see what happens next in this 4 part series!imagineagents_02_cvr_copy(2)

karla_staff_picksKARLA’S PICK :: PORCELAIN: A GOTHIC FAIRY TALE: What can I say? I’m a sucker for a creepy fairy tale. That’s why my pick this week is Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale by Benjamin Read and Chris Wildgoose. As most classic fairy tales do, it starts off with an unfortunate soul. This time, the tale of woe begins with a young orphan girl referred to only as “Child” who lives off of the streets, and begs, steals and cheats to stay alive. Child attempts to steal from the wealthy Porcelain Maker, an alchemist who might be much more than he seems. From there, the story weaves a fascinating, and dark, fairy tale that I can’t wait to get my hands on! The art for this story is really quite stunning, which I was charmed to see from an artist who’s last name seems like it was plucked from the pages of a fairy tale in the first place! I mean, really? Wildgoose?? OF COURSE he should illustrate a fairy tale! It seems only fitting.

Loyal HeroesCon veterans know that our annual QuickDraw Contest is a great way to put your creative and artistic talents to the test! A HeroesCon tradition, the QuickDraw is our all-ages artist competition where we give you #2 pencils and Bristol board, and you give us 20 minutes of your feverish inspiration.  A qualified Art Instructor then judges the results and we, in turn, give the winners some fabulous prizes.  It’s a win-win and it’s open to any and all who want to try their hand at creating some HeroesCon original art!
Stepping in to sweeten the prize-winners’ pot this year, the following companies have donated more than $10,000 worth of prizes to give away to the talented winners!!

Prizes are awarded for 1st2nd, and 3rd place, in three age categories: 10 & under, 11-15and 16 & up. The QuickDraw is held on all three days of the show, so you have three opportunities to take home some incredible art supplies and bragging rights!

Prizes from these companies will also be awarded to participants of our Drink and Draw on Friday night, June 6 at the Hilton! Drink and Draw submissions will be judged by a panel of some of our favorite Artist Alley Pros, and prizes will be awarded at our show on Saturday!

We would also like to thank Artograph, Jerry’s Artarama, and Prismacolor for helping to supply our 2013 Live Art Stage, where artists will be crafting their pieces for the HeroesCon Annual Art Auction. The Art Auction will be held on Saturday June 7, from 8PM – until in the Providence Ballroom at the Westin Charlotte. We hope to see you all there!!

As an added bonus, Jerry’s Artarama has provided us with this coupon that you can use from NOW until June 15 to get $15.00 OFF your order of $79.00 or more! So get yourself some art supplies, and maybe one day we’ll be seeing YOU in our famous Artist Alley!

STAFF PICKS :: HE-MAN #1 :: APRIL 17, 2013

April 16, 2013 By: Karla Marsh Category: Uncategorized

KARLA’S PICK :: HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 ONGOING :  By the POWER OF GRAYSKULL, we have a new HE-MAN COMIC!! Yeah, NO ONE should be surprised that this is my pick of the week. Heck, even my profile photo is a picture of me next to one of my most FAVORITE characters in the world SHE-RA, who is one of the prominent characters in the Masters of the Universe realm. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 picks up where the six-issue mini-series, as well as the digital-only issues,  left off in January!
Peace has once again returned to Eternia after the defeat of Skeletor and the return of He-Man and the Masters. But as is all too often true, peace is short lived. Eternia quickly finds itself under attack once again, this time from an outside invader: The Evil Horde! This issue introduces Despara, force Captain of the Evil Horde, who is a ruthless conqueror loyal to the evil Hordak, and much to my relief a RED-HEADED Teela. (My favorite Teela will ALWAYS be red-headed! No offense to blonde Teela.)
With a new story-line by writer Keith Giffen and beautiful artwork by Pop Mhan, I am TRULY looking forward to getting my hands on this new ongoing series!!
