PHOTO REPORT :: Claudio Sanchez, Feb. 10, 2009!

February 11, 2009 By: Dustin Harbin Category: DISCUSS, EVENTS, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, Photos

Well, I said it briefly yesterday, but now I have said it in a much more longwinded fashion: Claudio Sanchez is a super-nice guy, the signing we hosted yesterday went almost impossibly smoothly, and everyone had a great time.I mean, check out all these peeps:

Okay, there are 40-something photos, most with wearisome descriptions and anecdotes, all yours for the viewing over at our Flickr site (I just noticed we’ve crossed 1200 photos!!). I sincerely hope you enjoyed them. I’m home sick today, and it was extra hard to think of anything to say when I was so busy pitying myself. The things I do for you!

Oh, but before I forget, for those of you who couldn’t come but want a piece of the action:

Before he left to go play last night’s Coheed & Cambria show at the newly named Bojangles Arena, Claudio kindly signed the rest of the “bloody” Kill Audio vinyl figures we’d gotten in for the event. If you’d like one of these tour exclusive fellas, drop Shelton an e-mail or call us at 704.375.7462 with your charge info to order one. We’ll probably charge you $5 or $6 or so, depending on where you live–and of course you can just pick one up in the store anytime, until they’re all gone. Okay–go drink in the photo report!!

CHARLOTTE MINICON!!

January 20, 2009 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Charlotte Minicon, DISCUSS, EVENTS, Photos

On Saturday we held our annual Charlotte Minicon, one of the oldest one-day shows in the country! The turnout was great, with over 450 through the door, and there were smiles all around! People turned out not only to meet our guests–including (deep breath) Greg Adams, Duane Ballenger, Chris Brunner, J. Chris Campbell, Ian Flynn, Georges Jeanty, Jason Latour, Buddy Prince, Budd Root, and Andy Smith–but to enter our door prize drawings. We drew 5 different prizes, each consisting of a copy of the white-hot Amazing Spider-Man #583, with the last one being the SUPER hot Obama variant! Even better, the Obama variant was donated by our bud Paul from Dominion Comics in Lynchburg, Virginia! I think Paul earned himself a “Minicon MVP” award there. Thanks Paul!

But if it were up to me, I’d give MVP Honorable Mention to our own Seth, who (once again) made us all look bad by being the first one in with Shelton at 7 in the morning, and the last one out when we loaded back out that night! Seth makes the rest of us employees look bad, but we’re working up a smear campaign to take some of the wind out of his sails, don’t you worry!

Also earning a prize of some kind (Booby Prize? No-Prize?) is Shelton and his lady-love Linda’s dog Bodie, a puppy that they miss no opportunity to show off, carry around, or just accept generally accept and agree with compliments over. Linda brought Bodie by in the afternoon, and suddenly all the pictures Shelton was taking, which were previously of the guests, dealers, or crowds, became all about Bodie, Bodie, Bodie. I admit though–he IS a cute dog.

These are just a few of the pictures Shelton took, but you can see the whole set over at our Flickr page. Check it out, and while you’re there, feast on the bajillion other pictures! If we don’t see you in the store, we’ll see you one month from now for the George Romero signing in our store! More details to come!

PHOTO REPORT :: Shelton At XCON World

November 07, 2008 By: Shelton Drum Category: DISCUSS, Other Events, Photos

Last Saturday was maybe the longest day ever working comic conventions. I do remember staying up all night prepping for HeroesCon back in the day, but this was waking up at home at 4am and hitting the road before 5 for Myrtle Beach.

I arrived at 8am, just after sunrise. I went ahead and walked out the 20 yards or so from the conference center to the ocean because I knew once I got started setting up and the show opened I would not get another chance. I didn’t want to drive all the way to the coast and have to admit I didn’t set foot on the beach! Needless to say, it was a beautiful morning. Not a cloud in the sky with a daytime high of 75 degrees, on NOVEMBER 1st! What a great day to be at the beach…I wish I could have spent the day out there, but duty called.

I was impressed by the cool sand sculpture the con had commissioned on the beach. Jabba the hut, Jar-Jar Binks, Stimpy, a Bat-signal and ole Shellhead’s helmet. Pretty cool.

The day was great. A first time con is always an unknown, but Chad put everything he had into it. The show drew a little over 300 fans for comics, art and gaming. I had good traffic and better than average sales all day. It helped that the dealers’ room was diverse and I was one of only three comic sellers. Our buddy Brett, of Brett’s Comic Pile and the Virginia Comicon came down from Richmond, along with Chad’s Apocalypse Comics. The ratio of fans to sellers was just right. Chad is already planning next year’s show and I expect it to just get better and better.

I was loaded and ready to drive over to Atlanta for Wes Tillander’s Atlanta Comic Con by 8pm. As I suspected, the sun was down and I had not gotten back outside to the beach. I was really wishing I could have stayed and enjoyed the awesome weather the next day. Atlanta is not a short hop from the beach–I arrived in Hotlanta at 3 am! Thankfully the clocks fell back an hour overnight for daylight savings time and I managed to get about 5 hours sleep before I had to get up and set up the comic display again.

Atlanta was better than it has been the past few shows. Wes had a good crowd, possibly due to having Georges Jeanty as the special guest. I had quite a few new faces coming by the table looking for Buffy Season Eight comics and other back issues drawn by Georges. The newly built travel stock of just the “good stuff” has been well received and Seth and I just keep tweaking it every week to make it even better.

I was loaded and on the road back to Charlotte by 7pm (another day without seeing the light of day), and in my driveway by 10:30pm. It’s a good thing I love old comics and seeing old friends at the shows, cause driving 14 hours, working 24 hours (including loading and unloading the van 6 times) in a about 43 hours is crazy! I went to bed early Monday.

And I’m not done travelling yet–my schedule is packed this winter. Next up:

Big Apple Con — The National, Nov. 14-16 NYC.

Virginia Comic Con — Richmond , VA Nov. 23rd

Charlotte Comic Con — Dec. 27th — The Crowne Plaza uptown.

Happy Holidaze!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

October 31, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Photos

Happy Halloween from all of us at Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find, INCLUDING our own in-house superhero team, Blue Falcon and his trusty sidekick Dynomutt! Or maybe Blue Falcon is the sidekick–either way, Happy Halloween!

Now, if Dynomutt were to fight Scooby-Doo underwater…

PHOTO REPORT :: Pekar/Bechdel Report!

October 22, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: EVENTS, Photos

Yo all my peeps! Now up on our increasingly massive (over 1100 photos now) Flickr photo site is a photo report on Friday’s AWESOME appearance in our store by Harvey Pekar (American Splendor) and Alison Bechdel (Fun Home). There’s plenty of description over there, but here are a few highlights to read before you click here to go to Flickr:

1) Harvey Pekar and Alison Bechdel are both very nice, personable, and fascinating people.

2) Alison very patiently answered a list of questions that our Discussion Group leader Andy Mansell sent me for her (he couldn’t make it because of a last minute work thing, to his utter chagrin). She was floored by some of the questions, but answered them all with consideration and enthusiasm. I think I have a little crush on Alison Bechdel now, which is problematic AT BEST.

3) The ImaginOn is a cool place.

Okay! Now go look at the pictures!

REPORT! :: Watchmen Discussion Group.

September 04, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: DISCUSS, EVENTS, Photos

Ten-hut! Though it seems like nearly five days ago now, it was actually just last Saturday that we had our biggest-ever Heroes Discussion Group, helmed as ever by the supple Andy Mansell! While I’m sure part of the credit for the roughly 25-person turnout was the topic itself, an unknown little book by the name of “Watchmen”, I like to think most of the credit goes to Andy himself. He really knocked this one out of the park! I’ve probably read Watchmen at LEAST six or seven times all the way through, and Andy brought up some things that I’d never even dreamed were there–really a fascinating conversation.

But don’t take my word for it: I’ve posted a few scratchy cellphone-camera photos of the discussion, which this time took place across the street from our store at the Philosopher’s Stone restaurant. Our buddy Vy had her fancy-dan camera out, so hopefully she’ll be posting her photos to her own Flickr account, or post a link to same in the comments below. Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a huge success! I believe the next discussion will be around the end of the month, and feature Notes For A War Story, by Gipi. I’ll try to get a date hammered out tomorrow before I send out the Heroes Hotline!

PHOTO REPORT :: Mark Millar & Tony Harris!

August 21, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: EVENTS, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, Photos

Now up on our ginormous Flickr site (over 1,000 photos now!) is a massive photo report of last Sunday’s big “Tour of Duty” shindig! The short version was that there were a ton of people, and they all had an AWEsome time, which was great. Mark and Tony were super sweet, as were special guest stars Tommy Lee Edwards and Nathan Edmondson. I’d say more, but I just spent like three hours screwing with all these photos and writing little descriptions. You can see the Flickr set by clicking the photo above or right here. Enjoy!

ON THE SCENE :: Mark Millar, Tony Harris, Tommy Lee Edwards And More!

August 17, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Comics Industry, EVENTS, Photos

I’m going out of town for the next couple of days (to see the MELVINS, baby!), so I wanted to get a few pictures up for those of you who were unable to come today. As I type they’re still signing away, but things will be wrapping up pretty soon. I’ll put a couple of photos up here, but expect by the end of the week a longer report on our Flickr site.

The line early on–things started a hair late, but everyone was SUPER cool, as usual. Of course, we have great customers.

Here’s “Locutus”, whose name I just forgot (sorry, Loc). He won the Hero Initiative auction for the first spot in line and a free copy of the tour incentive cover. My man Loc!

You don’t write all those famous comics without a big brain–here Mark Millar poses while Tony Harris does ALL the work, sketching away.

Also on hand were our buddies Tommy Lee Edwards and Nathan Edmundson, who are both pretty fun to talk to.

A quick shot of how fun everything was. Oops! I gotta go to a party with all these guys. Finally, a perk! I’ll give you a full report later in the week. Keep it real, guys!

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! As part of the Tour of Duty in support of the new War Heroes book from Image, we’ll be hosting Mark Millar and Tony Harris in a store signing from 2-5pm!

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE! We’ll also have a SUPER limited edition tour exclusive version of War Heroes #1, available while supplies last for $5 a pop.

OH BUT CHECK THIS OUT! You can still bid on the first spot in line, as well as a FREE copy of the tour exclusive, the proceeds of which go to the Hero Initiative! Good Lord!

REPORT :: Heroes Discussion Group :: July 21, 2008

July 24, 2008 By: Dustin Harbin Category: DISCUSS, EVENTS, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, Photos

I believe Andy is getting ready to post the announcement of our next Heroes Discussion Group, but I thought I’d post the photos from last Monday’s discussion before I forget. I foolishly had my telephone’s camera set to a small file resolution, so they’re blurry little photos, but we had a great time and I wanted to let you know if you missed it.

I would even argue that this was the best Discussion Group, especially because not all of us (especially myself) were particularly big fans of Sandman Volume 4: Season of Mists. Rather than being dull, it actually promoted more discussion of the book, rather than the lovefests we had for Batman Year One and All Star Superman. Andy was on his toes, too, and as usual directed the conversation into a lot of areas we might not have explored otherwise.

PLUS we had our biggest turnout yet, around 12-15 people. Really good time–we expect an even BIGGER turnout for the next installment, which I’ll let good ole Andy talk about. But for now, be sure to check out our Heroes Discussion Group set on our Flickr page for pictures!
