It has been a rather exciting and busy year for us at the Heroes Discussion Group. At our Annual Stock-Holders meeting at Heroes HQ in the Cayman Islands, we agreed that wanted to end this banner year by giving ourselves a well-deserved Christmas present. And what could be a better treat than to sit down and discuss the single most popular and beloved comic book series in the history of the four-color art form? None other than the world famous Belgian boy reporter–Tintin by the famed cartoonist extraordinaire Herge.

With the three mega-movies on the horizon, the Tintin juggernaut will finally conquer the American audience.  We want to make sure we sit down and examine and appreciate this seminal series before the civilians (you know who they are– some of us even live with some of them!) get their mitts on it. But which of the 7 volumes to tackle?? Believe me, any would have filled the bill nicely. Our fearful leader Shawn decided to run a poll to let Heroesdom Discussioneers vote for which volume to spotlight. With over half of the vote, the clear cut winner is Adventures of Tintin Volume 1 – which contains Tintin in America, Cigars of the Pharaoh and The Blue Lotus.

How do we handle the near century old anachronisms and era (in)appropriate racial stereotyping?

What is the continuing appeal of the Tintin comic?

Why has the series escaped such mega-stardom in America while it is the single best selling comic of all time throughout the rest of the world?

How does Tintin remain as popular with young female comic readers without any sort of lead female character?

Most importantly:

Are the Thompson Twins actually related to one another

and

Can Snowy really speak?

The mind reels!!!!

So give yourself a well-deserved break from shopping, cleaning, cooking, eating and the general feeling of Holiday Stress and join us for an entertaining two hour oasis. We will meet in the back of the store on Saturday afternoon December 18th at noon. We will most likely head across the street to one of the local watering holes– Hey, this is a celebration for Rao’s sake.

For the December Heroes Discussion Group we will be delving into the world of Tintin but we need your help to pick out which book we will be officially discussing. Our distributor pretty much only carries the 3-in-1 hardcover volumes, so for simplicities sake we will be choosing between those seven books. I have them listed by volume number and I included the three stories that each book contains. You can only pick one, so choose wisely! The poll will be up until the end of the day on November 23 after which we will announce the results along with details about the discussion group (if you need a heads up, the group will meet Saturday, December 18 from 1 to 3 pm). Tuesday, November 2 is Election Day! Don’t forget to stop by your polling place and cast your vote! In North Carolina the polls will be open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. If you live in the Charlotte area you can go to the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections website to view information about the candidates in your district. Also, The Charlotte Observer has a special Voter’s Guide section to help you educate yourself on the candidates. As my Dad always says, Vote Early and Vote Often!

Hey guys! I just wanted to do a quick post to update everyone on the results of the poll we did last week. We asked our fine blog readers to let us know what is the best day for signings/in-store events. “Saturday afternoon” won with a clear majority of the votes. 65% to be exact! We will keep this in mind as we organize events. We want to ensure that the maximum amount of people can attend. Thank you everyone for your input, as always we appreciate it!

I installed a poll plugin for the blog a couple weeks ago and I have been looking for an opportunity to try it out and at our store meeting last Thursday Linda came up with a brilliant poll question. We have some exciting events planned for the fall but we haven’t nailed down the details just yet. So we want to find out from you, loyal readers, when is the best time to have a signing or to do an in-store appearance.
