JLA/AVENGERS FOR HERO INITIATIVE

JLA/AVENGERS FOR HERO INITIATIVE

This week a new limited printing of the classic JLA/Avengers crossover by George Pérez and Kurt Busiek was announced. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Hero Initiative, a favorite charity of our beloved Mr. Pérez. This long out of print collection is currently set to receive a print run of 7000 copies.

While all of us are understandably excited about this title being available again, and even happier that George has seen the outpouring of enthusiasm, this limited run means that it will be impossible for everyone who wants a copy to get one.

Like every shop in the country, we have been bombarded with requests for copies. We have received requests in the store, over the phone, on social media, and over email.

While we have ordered as many copies as we can,
we have to state the obvious:
MASS ALLOCATIONS WILL OCCUR FOR THIS BOOK, AND THE DEMAND WILL CERTAINLY OUTWEIGH THE SUPPLY.

As a result of these circumstances, we have made the decision to AUCTION OFF whatever copies we may receive, with ALL PROCEEDS going directly to the Hero Initiative on behalf of Mr. George Pérez.

In the unlikely event that the print run is expanded we may revise or reconsider our plans. At this time, it seems that auctioning off whatever copies we DO receive is the only FAIR way to honor the legacy of Mr. Pérez and Mr. Busiek’s masterpiece, and to ENSURE that any potential proceeds benefit the cause in which this entire enterprise was intended.

“I am so incredibly overjoyed to hear that my fanboy dream is going to be available to a whole new generation of comic book fans who weren’t there when it was printed that many years ago. And it’s wonderful that it’s happening while I’m still alive to see it.

Whatever it was that allowed this reprint to be released I am very grateful and on behalf of the fans all I can say is well done DC and Marvel!

And of course, I am so elated that all profits from this re-print are going to one of my favorite personal charities!”

CARDS FOR GEORGE :: Want to send a card or letter to George Perez? Send them to Heroes and Shelton will deliver!!

January 28, 2022 By: Karla Southern Category: Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, NEWS, Now Read This!

LETTERS FOR GEORGE

George-Perez-is-awesome

George Perez has LONG been a
BELOVED FRIEND
and is Heroes FAMILY in EVERY SENSE.

Shelton’s friendship with this Colossus-Of-Comics pre-dates the Heroes Convention itself, and just like the comics George has created, that friendship has become even more treasured over the decades.

We were all heartbroken to hear George’s announcement regarding his declining health back in December of 2021, and like most everyone who has ever had the pleasure of his company, we wanted to make sure that he knows JUST HOW MUCH WE LOVE HIM.

Shelton will be making a trip at the end of February to visit George in person, and we wanted to extend the opportunity for YOU to tell George just how much he has meant to you over the years as well!

If you would like to send Mr. Perez a card or a letter, Shelton will deliver them in-person!
Please get your cards and letters to Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find by Sunday, February 20!

In case you were unaware of George’s condition this is his announcement from December 7, 2021:

From George:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To all my fans, friends and extended family,

It’s rather hard to believe that it’s been almost three years since I formally announced my retirement from producing comics due to my failing vision and other infirmities brought on primarily by my diabetes. At the time I was flattered and humbled by the number of tributes and testimonials given me by my fans and peers. The kind words spoken on those occasions were so heartwarming that I used to quip that “the only thing missing from those events was me lying in a box.”

It was amusing at the time, I thought.

Now, not so much. On November 29th I received confirmation that, after undergoing surgery for a blockage in my liver, I have Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer. It is surgically inoperable and my estimated life expectancy is between 6 months to a year. I have been given the option of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, but after weighing all the variables and assessing just how much of my remaining days would be eaten up by doctor visits, treatments, hospital stays and dealing with the often stressful and frustrating bureaucracy of the medical system, I’ve opted to just let nature take its course and I will enjoy whatever time I have left as fully as possible with my beautiful wife of over 40 years, my family, friends and my fans.

Since I received my diagnosis and prognosis, those in my inner circle have given me so much love, support and help, both practical and emotional. They’ve given me peace.

There will be some business matters to take care of before I go. I am already arranging with my art agent to refund the money paid for sketches that I can no longer finish. And, since, despite only having one working eye, I can still sign my name, I hope to coordinate one last mass book signing to help make my passing a bit easier. I also hope that I will be able to make one last public appearance wherein I can be photographed with as many of my fans as possible, with the proviso that I get to hug each and every one of them. I just want to be able to say goodbye with smiles as well as tears.

I know that many of you will have questions to ask or comments to make, and rather than fueling the fires of speculation and well-meaning but potentially harmful miscommunication, I will be returning to the arena of social media by starting a new Facebook account where fans and friends can communicate with me or my designated rep directly for updates and clarification.
Please search for @TheGeorgePerez on Facebook if you’d like to join the page to receive updates. For media and press inquiries, please use the contact information on the page as well. Please respect the privacy of my wife and family at this time and use the Facebook page rather than reaching out through other channels.
I may not be able to respond as quickly as I would like since I will be endeavoring to get as much outside pleasure as I can in the time allotted me, but I will do my best. Kind words would also be greatly appreciated. More details to follow once it’s up and running.

Well, that’s it for now. This is not a message I enjoyed writing, especially during the Holiday Season, but, oddly enough, I’m feeling the Christmas spirit more now than I have in many years. Maybe it’s because it will likely be my last. Or maybe because I am enveloped in the loving arms of so many who love me as much as I love them. It’s quite uplifting to be told that you’ve led a good life, that you’ve brought joy to so many lives and that you’ll be leaving this world a better place because you were part of it. To paraphrase Lou Gehrig: “Some people may think I got a bad break, but today, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.”

Take care of yourselves—and thank you.

TASCHEN + MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT Launches Spider-Man Vol. 1 1962-1964 – Created with photos from Shelton’s personal collection!

TASCHEN and Marvel Entertainment Announce ‘The Marvel Comics Library’;

Spider-Man. Vol. 1. 1962–1964 To Kick Off Long-Term Collaboration Today

New Series Reproduces Marvel’s Rarest Comics in Extra-Large Format.

New York, NY – December 7, 2021 – ‘The Marvel Comics Library’, an exclusive, long-term collaboration between TASCHEN and Marvel, was announced today. Over the next decade, Marvel’s rarest classic comics, including Spider-Man, Avengers and Captain America will be reproduced in their original glory, in extra-large format. The library offers collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lay their hands on the world’s most desirable comics.

The inaugural volume of ‘The Marvel Comics Library’, Spider-Man. Vol. 1. 1962–1964, features the first 21 stories of everybody’s favorite web slinger, meticulously honoring the original vision of Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. An in-depth historical essay by Marvel editor Ralph Macchio, an introduction by uber-collector David Mandel, original art boards, rare photographs, and other never-before-seen gems make this book the ultimate tribute to the teen who redefined what it meant to be a hero, right ahead of Spider-Man’s 60th birthday.

TASCHEN’s extra-large format, close in size to the original artworks, reveal startling new details in the work of Marvel’s most acclaimed artists. For each title in the series, the most pristine pedigreed comics (from the collection of our own SHELTON DRUM!) have been cracked open for reproduction in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company. Rather than recolor the original production artwork (as has been done in previous decades’ reprints of classic comics), TASCHEN has attempted to create an ideal representation of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. Beginning with high grade, top-quality comics sourced with the assistance of the CGC, super-high-resolution photographs of each page were made as printed more than half a century ago, using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era’s inexpensive, imperfect printing. This included improved and balanced ink densities and color matching, proper registration of the four-color printing and correction of thick/thin lines resulting from the flexible plates “smudging.” The end result is a finished product — as if hot off a world-class printing press produced without economic or time-pressure constraints – tailored for readers, fans, artists and collectors alike.

Each volume features an essay by a comic book historian alongside hundreds of photos and artifacts. The books use three different paper stocks, including an uncoated and wood-free paper exclusively developed for this series that simulates the feel of the original comics.

The first 5,000 copies of Spider-Man. Vol. 1 will be numbered and released as a ‘Famous First Edition’. The book is also available as a Collector’s Edition, limited to 1,000 copies featuring an aluminum print cover tipped into a leatherette-bound spine, foil embossing, and housed in a slipcase. Each book is individually numbered. The inaugural purchase of the Collector’s Edition entitles the collector to the selection of a personal favorite number between 1 and 1,000 on a first-come-first-serve basis. This will also secure a preemptive right to reserve a copy with the identical edition number for all forthcoming Collector’s Edition titles in ‘The Marvel Comic Library’.

The next titles in ‘The Marvel Comics Library’ series will be Avengers. Vol. 1. 1963–1965Fantastic Four. Vol. 1. 1961–1963 and Captain America, all scheduled for release in 2022 and 2023.

______

Shelton granted exclusive and unprecedented access to some of his most prized and beloved comics, and art, to assist in the creation of this comics tome.

“Working with TASCHEN and the CGC on these books has been an honor. The finished product FAR EXCEEDS any pre-conceived expectations I may have held! I just opened the box with the book, and I know the word might be overused, but it is AMAZING! The production quality is awesome. I love it!”

THANK YOU FROM THE STAFF OF HEROES AREN’T HARD TO FIND

To All Our Guests, Exhibitors, Attendees, Volunteers and Staff

THANK-YOU

The first ever Giant-Size Charlotte Mini-Con is over and a part of history!

Everyone at Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find wishes to extend our appreciation to all those who participated in the Giant-Size Charlotte Mini-Con!

Thank You to our Guests for making the Giant-Size Charlotte Mini-Con a part of your schedule. As creators, you add life, excitement, and fun to the Convention. It was great to see long time Heroes Convention guests as well as those of you who are just beginning to make the Heroes experience a part of your lives.  We look forward to seeing you back at the Heroes Convention in June!

Thank You to all the Exhibitors for taking the chance and coming to our first major event back at the Charlotte Convention Center (CCC). We hope you had a fun and profitable time. Without the vendors it wouldn’t be the comic show that we all know and love.

To all the Attendees who came despite continuing health concerns about attending a large public event, we appreciate you being a part of the con. We were very happy to see so many of our regular convention attendees back and enjoying a comic book show.

Special thanks to all the Kibby’s Sidekicks Volunteers who made everyone’s job a lot easier (there are too many of you to name, and we don’t want to risk missing anyone). “Many hands make light work”. Your willingness to step up wherever and however you were needed greatly contributed to the success of the Giant-Size Charlotte Mini-Con. We look forward to you continuing our dear friend Charles Kibby’s legacy of volunteering at future Heroes Conventions and events.

We look forward to everyone returning (and inviting all your friends) to be a part of the Fantastic 40th Heroes Convention Anniversary Celebration, June 24-26, 2022.

Order your Heroes Convention tickets now, and we’ll see you there!!
