Tim Townsend Joins HeroesCon 2008 Guest List!

September 24, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Indie Island

Some would wonder why he wasn’t on the Guest List in the first place–Tim is one of our oldest friends and biggest boosters. Fortunately for his career, he’s also one of the most renowned inkers in comics, having worked on a host of high profile books, over some of the biggest pencillers in the industry, including Frank Quitely, Chris Bachalo, and Joe Madureira, to name just a very few. Tim also has a personal style that is, er, unique–as seen here, in this photo with Joe Madureira, circa (I hope) the 90’s.

Good Gravy! Still More HeroesCon Guest List Additions!

September 21, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Indie Island

We confirmed so many new guests at the Baltimore Comicon that we’re having trouble fitting in all the announcements! But for the second time this week, we’re please to announce more additions to the HeroesCon 08 Guest List! Brand new on the list are inker extraordinaire Michael Bair (Identity Crisis), artist Shannon Gallant (Marvel Adventures: Avengers), and Silver Age legend Herb Trimpe (Incredible Hulk)! And new on our Indie Island list are super-studly Dave Crosland, artist on IDW’s Scarface: Scarred For Life and the upcoming Everybody’s Dead; and Scott Kurtz, the man behind the uber-popular online strip PVP! And believe it or not, there are still more announcements yet to be made! Phew!

HEROESCON :: More Awesome Guest List Additions!

September 17, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Indie Island

Why, it seems like just last week that I was announcing the addition of Mark Waid, Eric Powell, and Chris DiBari to our HeroesCon 08 Guest List. How startling to have more names to announce already! But announce them I must–in fact, there are more announcements right around the corner, but they’ll have a hard time equalling this one for “pizzazz.” Stemming directly from our big trip to last weekend’s Baltimore Comicon, we’ve just added living legend Al Feldstein to our guest list! Al’s probably most famous for his work for EC Comics in the 50’s, both as artist and as writer/editor, and will be making his first HeroesCon appearance next summer, which is no end of exciting for us!

Also making his first HeroesCon appearance will be indie stud Dean Haspiel, of Billy Dogma, The Quitter (with Harvey Pekar), and ACT-I-VATE fame! Dino was fortunate/unfortunate enough to be seated next to me at the Harvey Awards, and somehow we made a love connection strong enough to bring him to Charlotte. What can’t love accomplish?

But that’s still not all–returning to HeroesCon next year will be artist/inker/editor Mike Manley, the steersman behind Draw! Magazine, inker of a million books, and art blogger extraordinaire. Mike is one of those guys who’s just cool to meet at shows, always ready to talk about art and craft and stuff–if you budding artists haven’t checked out Draw! yet, it’s an invaluable resource for the aspirant, with tons of interviews with the top pro’s in comics, often focused on the nuts and bolts of their craft. Awesome! Okay: more to come, maybe later this week? Stay tuned!

HEROESCON :: Mark Waid, Eric Powell, & Chris DiBari Join Guest List!

September 12, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News

In the first of several big HeroesCon 08 Guest List announcements over the next few weeks, relating to our recent trip to Baltimore, we’re stoked to announce the addition of Mark Waid, Eric Powell, and Chris DiBari to the guest list! Mark Waid you may–just may–know from his decades of work on all sides of the comic book industry, including writing the recent Brave And The Bold relaunch, incredibly popular runs on Fantastic Four and The Flash, and currently as Editor-In-Chief of Boom! Studios. This is, of course, the barest tip of the iceberg of Mark’s work, but there you go.
Eric Powell is of course the writer/artist behind the hit “Goon” comic from Dark Horse, and will be making his, er, third trip to HeroesCon this year? If you haven’t met him, he comes off all quiet and stuff at first, then BAM! out comes the funny. Don’t be fooled! Also returning to HeroesCon this year is Chris DiBari, the artist behind Starship Troopers and The Hunger. I know this is exciting and everything, but remember: this is only the start–you need to pace yourself, because we’ll be making another couple of announcements next week, so don’t wear yourself out!

Nicholas Gurewitch Plans Awesome Marooning On Indie Island!

August 31, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon News, Indie Island

You should really go and check this site out.

Jiggy-what? Nicholas Gurewitch, for those of you who don’t know, is the man behind the uber-successful online strip The Perry Bible Fellowship. After months of stalking and heavy breathing respectful correspondence, Nicholas has signed on for next year’s HeroesCon! Me and Todd are all atwitter here in the office, where you can’t see us–we’ll totally play it cool and deny it if you see us, though. I don’t think I have the language to explain how awesome the PBF is, so I suggest you go and check it out yourself. However, I will issue these two disclaimers: 1) It doesn’t have anything to do with the Bible or religion, although he touches on all sorts of different subjects; 2) It’s not for kids. Not your kids, anyway.

HEROESCON :: Stuart & Kathryn Immonen And Ethan Van Sciver Join 2008 Guest List!

August 22, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News

True to my word, I’m pleased to announce the first addition to our guest list resulting from my trip on Shelton’s behalf to beautiful Canada: artist/writer team Stuart & Kathryn Immonen have just confirmed for next year’s Heroes Convention. Those of you with long memories might remember Stuart attending HeroesCon 2000, back when he and Kurt Busiek‘s Shockrockets was just coming out from then-publishing imprint Gorilla. Most recently he’s the new artist on Ultimate Spider-Man, not to mention Nextwave, and before that Ultimate X-Men, and on and on. Stuart has worked on just about every major character there is in comics, and a quick trip to his site will reveal that that’s just the beginning of his talents! He’s currently producing, along with writing partner (and wife, I presume) Kathryn Immonen, the online Moving Pictures strip, which is gorgeous!

We’re also excited to welcome back to HeroesCon superstar artist Ethan Van Sciver, who’s laundry list of credits (Green Lantern, Superman Batman, New X-Men) has turned him into one of the most sought-after names in comics. And with a recent move to good ole North Carolina, he’s also practically a neighbor! Always a popular guest, be sure and welcome Ethan to town the next time you see him!

Scott Campbell (Not That One) Joins Indie Island List!

August 16, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Indie Island

Whoa! This guy is my new favorite artist, not to mention one of the designers behind one of the coolest games ever, Psychonauts! As far as I know, he’s not related to that other Scott Campbell (by that I mean J. Scott Campbell), but he’s plenty-nuff Campbell for me! It’s super-exciting to announce that he’s joining the guest list for next year’s HeroesCon: Indie Island soiree!

You can catch Scott’s cartoons in the Hickee and Flight anthologies, not to mention Project: Superior and the recent Beasts! book from Fantagraphics. And be sure to check out his sweet blog, which you should go to right away and start looking at. Now! There’s some really great stuff on there, which will either make you laugh a lot, or prove to you how humorless and dark your life has become. Cheer up!

Mike Wieringo :: 1963-2007

August 13, 2007 By: Shelton Drum Category: Comics Industry, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News

The Heroes family is in mourning today: Sunday, August 12, fan favorite artist and HeroesCon regular Mike Wieringo suffered a heart attack and passed away. Mike was the artist behind many popular runs on big-name characters like Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Flash, and many more. He was also the co-creator, along with writer and close friend Todd Dezago, of Tellos. He was just 44 years old.
The unbelievable news of Mike’s death overnight was the first thing I heard this morning—it’s still impossible to accept. He was a fan at the 1985 Heroes Convention, his first one, and I had the opportunity to meet him that year. He was of course an aspiring young artist, and I thought he showed a lot of promise. He never missed another con after that first trip. I watched him work on his art from year to year, and was so proud of him when he got those first independent jobs; then practically overnight he was a pro. His art took on a life of its own, and besides his artistic talents, he became one of the most universally respected and loved creators in the industry. And at the same time, Mike was becoming a part of our/my family. He was like a brother or a son to me, and established himself as firmly with my staff and the fans. He would have done anything for me—and many times, did–and I would have for him. That’s one of the things that being a family means, doing things for one another out of love.
In many ways, Mike embodies everything that I love about comics; in a very real way, he represents our closest friends and “family” members. When we refer to the HeroesCon “family”, it’s Mike Wieringo that we’re talking about. When we say that we’re excited to see everybody this summer, it’s Mike Wieringo that we can’t wait to see. And when we talk about how much we love and cherish the many pro’s and fans that make what we do possible, it’s Mike Wieringo that we’re loving and cherishing.
And next year, when we come together again and remember the friends we’ve lost, it’ll be Mike Wieringo that we’re missing. I am proud to have known Mike for the past 22 years and to have called him friend and brother. Thanks for the wonderful art, support and memories, and most of all, for your friendship. Rest in peace, Mike.

HEROESCON :: Heroesonline Flickr Page Goes Live!

August 03, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Photos

Check it, all y’all:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/heroesonline
Now, I’m still working out all the kinks, as far as the order that photos should display in, labels, sets, blah-blah-blah, BUT the page is up, seems to be working, and took a million less years than it would have if I were doing it all the old way, by hand, coding each, etc. Of course, the photos currently up (all by the very generous Gary Corbin) are just the teensiest tip of the photo iceberg, but I’ll continue to update with more, and then gradually start working my way backwards through the history of the show, at least the history I have photo documentation of. And of course I’ll let you know here on the blog whenever I add anything. Enjoy!

Bob McLeod and Sean Taylor Join HeroesCon ’08 Guest List!

July 30, 2007 By: Dustin Harbin Category: Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News

This just in! Legendary artist Bob McLeod will be returning to Heroes Convention next year. It’s hard to think of an artist with a finer pedigree, or who has worked on more books over the years than Bob. Just a partial list of his credits includes Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Star Wars, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Conan (deep breath), Captain America, GI Joe, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman… never mind, there’re too many to list here. Anyway, we’re pleased as punch to have him back next year! Also joining the guest list for his first HeroesCon is Sean Taylor, the writer of Gene Simmons Dominatrix and Gene Simmons House of Horror!
