STAFF PICKS :: DEVIL DINOSAUR BY JACK KIRBY THE COMPLETE SERIES TP :: MAY 28, 2014

May 26, 2014 at 10:48 am By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: DEVIL DINOSAUR BY JACK KIRBY THE COMPLETE SERIES TP: Here’s the back-story. In 1972, DC asked Jack Kirby to come up with a title to compete with Marvel’s recent licensing acquisition of Planet of the Apes. Hence, Kamandi. A few years later, Kirby was back at Marvel and they asked him to create a new property  that could go paw to paw with the new Kamandi TV series that DC was developing. So Kirby grudgingly  came up with Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy. The series only ran for 9 issues. The comic was geared at younger readers, but like most comics back in the ’70s it was never marketed properly. So, at the time  DD  looked like a big-foot n embarrassment from the once-great King when compared to the more cutting edge ‘relevant’ comics from O’Neill and Engelhart. Today those topical books are still fun but are self important, quite silly and rather dated; meanwhile ol’ DD remains a great kids comic just brimming with the Kirby excitement, movement and creativity. Marvel is offering all nine issues in an affordable soft cover edition for only 19.95. You owe it to yourself to pick it up and enjoy!

STAFF PICKS :: GENIUS ANIMATED: CARTOON ART OF ALEX TOTH :: MAY 21, 2014

May 21, 2014 at 8:40 am By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: GENIUS ANIMATED: CARTOON ART OF ALEX TOTH: When we were growing up in the 1960s, cartoons were –as Charles Barkley might say, “turrible”
Thanks to the success of the Flintstones, cheap limited animation was all the rage. so we were stuck watching things like Breezily Bruin and Klondike Kat. But on Saturday morning, thanks to the success of the live action Batman TV show, Super-hero adventure was prospering. The animation was still ‘turrible’ and the family  friendly ratio– for each hero there had to be an adorable dog/monkey or precocious child- but the characters looked great. these were iconic designs that made the image of the characters last far longer than the cartoons themselves. The reason for this enormous bump in visual quality was that the designer for many of these shows was comics legend Alex Toth. In the span of a few years, he created Space Ghost (along with two precocious teens and a damn masked monkey), the Herculoids, Birdman, The Blue Falcon and later the good FF cartoon, Super Friends (two more precocious teens and a damn dog in a cape)and The Legion of DOOM!!!. Those designs live on to this very day. IDW celebrates Toth’s TV work with GENIUS ANIMATED CARTOON ART OF ALEX TOTH HC VOL 03 the final volume of IDW’s comprehensive over-view of Toth’s marvelous career.  There are hundreds of character design pages within these covers. You don’t want to miss this massive explosion of creativity (plus monkeys!)

STAFF PICKS :: THERE ARE TOO MANY GOOD BOOKS-GET OVER HERE NOW!!!

May 14, 2014 at 8:48 am By:

staff_picksandy_staff_picksANDY’S PICKS: There are so many great books coming out each week, it is difficult to pick just one, but the two best books are both pretty expensive.
JACK KIRBYS NEW GODS ARTISTS ED HC is a must for any Kirby fan. Over 100 pages from arguably Kirby’s best series shot directly from original art and printed at the art’s original size.  Just typing this makes my mouth water.
STK630758
BURNE HOGARTH TARZAN HC VOL 01 IN THE CITY OF GOLD begins the reprint run of ERB’s Ape-man courtesy of his second great artist (Hogarth followed Hal Foster and preceded Jesse Marsh and Russ Manning)
STK635092
So I highly recommend these two volumes but I must insist–insist!!!- you pick up a copy of
HEROBEAR AND THE KID TP VOL 01 INHERITANCE  This delightful, clever, ingenious and beautifully drawn comic by WRITER/ARTIST Mike Kunkle is perfect for the kids and even better for you. Don’t miss it because every kid deserves a Herobear. Who’s your (grand) daddy?
STK639370
Did I mention HELLBOY IN HELL TP VOL 01 DESCENT| $17.99 or the return of Shang-Chi in DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU #01| $3.99 or ASTRO CITY #12| $3.99 or FABLES #140| $2.99 (things are not looking well for the Fables)? Well, if I didn’t I really should have.

STAFF PICKS :: ANDRE THE GIANT LIFE & LEGEND GN :: MAY 14, 2014

May 13, 2014 at 9:54 am By:

staff_picksjustin_staff_picksJUSTIN’S PICK :: ANDRE THE GIANT LIFE & LEGEND GN: Fellow 80s kids will understand the childhood affinity for professional wrestling. It’s a cult that runs right up to today, but it found its footing and gathered its momentum in those halcyon days of Reaganomics and bad newsman toupees. The sport has its detractors; personally, I just enjoyed it for what it was: a good show. And we must remember, for all its highfalutin pretension and staggering gallery listings, art is, at its core, show business. It would seem that’s the point Box Brown is underlining in his biography of pro wrestling icon Andre the Giant. Once we start to gauge art by assumed intentions or monetary gain, we must evaluate ALL art by the same criteria, and that, my friends, is a slippery slope. Art is in the heart of the artist, and I believe this tender portrait of Mr. Roussimoff will illustrate that point quite well. Brown dove into some exhaustive research for this project, and his style – somewhere at the intersection of Tezuka and Pendleton Ward – is perfectly suited for the subject matter. Expect this one to show up on plenty of best-of-the-year lists, come December.

STAFF PICKS :: STARLIGHT #3 :: MAY 14, 2014

staff_picks

seth_staff_picksSETH’S PICK :: STARLIGHT #3: Starlight is yet another fine indicator of the recent resurgence of so many classic pulp elements back into comics. I will admit, though, that it took a little convincing from fellow Heroes staffers Rico and Justin for me to pick this one up. The art was a guaranteed joy from the time the book was announced. Artist Goran Parlov always produces strong and interesting work. My hesitation to pick it up was only rooted in the fact that I’ve historically found the work of writer Mark Millar to be gratuitous on many levels. He’s obviously a talented and versatile creator, I just doubted I’d have much interest in his take on the space opera.

Thankfully, I did give the book a shot, and soon realized that this is a very different kind of story for Millar. It’s full of classic pulp adventure goodness, and clearly reflects his love for the genre. Parlov is excellent as always, but I’d be remiss not to mention how impressed I’ve been with Millar’s character work here. His protagonist, the perfectly named Duke McQueen, did save the universe some four decades ago. After that heroism, he had a fairly mundane life, complete with a wife and kids. But what happens if you had your one adventure, somehow outlive your wife (and usefulness in the eyes of your kids), and in your golden years are called upon to save the universe once again? It’s an ambitious story about aging and adventuring that thus far hasn’t drifted into the excessive tendencies you might expect from Millar. If these two creators keep this up, we might just have a new classic in the making. starlight3
