STAFF PICKS :: HE-MAN #1 :: APRIL 17, 2013

April 16, 2013 By: Karla Southern Category: Uncategorized

KARLA’S PICK :: HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 ONGOING :  By the POWER OF GRAYSKULL, we have a new HE-MAN COMIC!! Yeah, NO ONE should be surprised that this is my pick of the week. Heck, even my profile photo is a picture of me next to one of my most FAVORITE characters in the world SHE-RA, who is one of the prominent characters in the Masters of the Universe realm. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1 picks up where the six-issue mini-series, as well as the digital-only issues,  left off in January!
Peace has once again returned to Eternia after the defeat of Skeletor and the return of He-Man and the Masters. But as is all too often true, peace is short lived. Eternia quickly finds itself under attack once again, this time from an outside invader: The Evil Horde! This issue introduces Despara, force Captain of the Evil Horde, who is a ruthless conqueror loyal to the evil Hordak, and much to my relief a RED-HEADED Teela. (My favorite Teela will ALWAYS be red-headed! No offense to blonde Teela.)
With a new story-line by writer Keith Giffen and beautiful artwork by Pop Mhan, I am TRULY looking forward to getting my hands on this new ongoing series!!

EVENT :: COMMON GROUND PLAZA MIDWOOD MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

August 24, 2012 By: Karla Southern Category: EVENTS, Other Events, Out and About

Land sakes! Is it the weekend already?! How’d that happen?!
Well, regardless of whether or not I fell through a worm-hole sometime on Wednesday evening, I hope that everyone has been taking advantage of the lovely weather and the break in the heat we’ve had over the last few days. The weekend is already upon us, and if you haven’t already made plans to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather then maybe it’s time you did!

If you were looking for something that’s family friendly, fun and, best of all, FREE to do this weekend, then let me suggest you join us at the Common Ground Festival! The Common Ground Festival is an all day event that will take up the length of Thomas Avenue between Central Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue in Charlotte on Saturday, August 25th. The festival begins at noon and will last until 11pm Saturday night. There will be live music, food, drinks, local artists, craftsmen and local vendors, including everyone’s favorite comic-shop, Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find!

We’ll be setting up a couple of Heroes booths at the event, and we plan to bring an assortment of Heroes goodies to give away and sell! We’ve also invited some of our favorite artists to come hang out with us at our booths throughout the day, so be sure to stop by and say “Hello!” You never know who might be dropping in!

STAFF PICKS :: ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #38 :: AUGUST 15, 2012

August 14, 2012 By: Karla Southern Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

KARLA’S PICK :: ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #38: Are you a fan of iconic illustration art? If so, then it’s time to get acquainted with Illustration Magazine and issue #38 is just about to hit the shelves! Each issue features full color photos and reproductions of some of the great illustration art from America’s past. Think Don Draper and Mad Men without the long wait between seasons. It also serves as an educational tool for fans of illustration and commercial art and design, as well as for fans of publishing history, comic books, pulp magazines and art collectors. Plus, it looks pretty darn classy sitting on your coffee table, and is a great conversation starter!

STAFF PICKS :: SAILOR MOON VOLUME 6 :: AUGUST 08, 2012

August 04, 2012 By: Karla Southern Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

KARLA’S PICK :: SAILOR MOON VOLUME 6: Sailor Moon and I go WAY back. All the way back to elementary school to be exact (and let’s not get into how long that’s been)! While this week’s release of Sailor Moon Vol. 6 may not necessarily be “new” material, it is a far better version than its previous incarnations! These new volumes have received the royal treatment with fresh translations, new cover art and have been reformatted to read right to left, in the style of traditional Japanese manga. Vol. 6 picks up after the “Black Moon” story arc and was roughly represented by season 3 of the popular Sailor Moon cartoon. I would recommend it for girls (and guys) of all ages, especially to those who think that true-love and bravery can transcend time.

STAFF PICKS :: THE BOYS #69 :: AUGUST 1, 2012

July 30, 2012 By: Karla Southern Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

KARLA’S PICK :: THE BOYS #69: Okay, I’m going to let you in on one of my dirty secrets, I LOVE The BOYS by Garth Ennis. Albeit, maybe it’s not for everyone, but you cannot deny that Mr. Ennis knows how to tell a good story, and he’s not afraid to give you a story line that leaves you saying, “What?! They can’t do that! They’ve gone too far!!” Garth let’s you know, oh yes…they can, they did and they’re gonna keep going until no one’s left.

Next week’s release is issue #69, which is certain to be a big game changer for most of the characters. If you read issue #68, you know that no one and nothing is sacred. Issue #69 is sure to be nail-biter for fans of the series and, with only three issues remaining, I would expect nothing less.
