STAFF PICKS :: SNARKED #11 :: AUGUST 10, 2012

August 13, 2012 at 9:00 am By:

HEATHER’S PICK :: SNARKED #11: Boy, do I ever love a good Roger Langridge comic! He has been hitting it out of the park on Snarked, so much so that I hope BOOM! will follow this series up with another new story when the current one ends next month with Issue #12.  Langridge’s refreshing take on the Walrus and the Carpenter from Alice in Wonderland has been a joy to read each month.  Be sure to pick up this issue to find out whether or not the Kingdom with be saved with some Snarked Island treasure (and what exactly that giant beaver on the cover is up to!).  If you haven’t been reading this wonderful all ages story, have no fear Snarked Volume One collecting Issues #0 through #4 awaits for your reading pleasure.

MATT’S PICK :: REVIVAL #2: “Creepy” Seeley and “Unnerving” Norton are raising the (un)dead to new levels.  I’d buy the book just for the Frison cover art alone!

STAFF PICKS :: ESSENTIAL WARLOCK VOLUME 1 :: AUGUST 10, 2012

August 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm By:

ANDY’S PICK :: ESSENTIAL WARLOCK VOLUME 1: Now available in one inexpensive edition– one of the greatest extended comic book stories of the 1970s.  It’s Jim Starlin’s triumphant run as the writer/artist for Adam Warlock from Strange Tales, Warlock and two of the most famous annuals in the history of Marveldom: Avengers Annual #7 (Nov. 1977) and Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2. The original issues cost a ton; the hard cover Marvel Masterworks cost a ton.  This complete run along with 15 additional issues in beautiful black and white costs only 19.95.  You owe it to yourself to read this book!

STAFF PICKS :: SAGA #6 :: AUGUST 15, 2012

August 10, 2012 at 10:35 am By:

DOUG’S PICK :: SAGA #6: Brian K Vaughn’s masterpiece, Saga, is my favorite book on the stands.  Deep in subplot and an expanding cast  of nuanced characters, this book manages to be accessible for new readers each month.  Perfectly paced Sci-fi adventure, grounded character drama and sweet art have this book on the top of my read pile every month.

NOW READ THIS! :: NATIONAL LAMPOON

August 9, 2012 at 9:00 am By:

Craig Fischer here. I’m a long-time comics fan who occasionally writes about this hobby (obsession?) we all share. Even though I don’t work at Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find, I’ve been asked to contribute a monthly column to the Heroes blog about comics that I’ve found provocative, infuriating, etc. I’ll begin with a story.

Last Saturday, I was shopping in an indoor antique mall in West Jefferson, North Carolina when I stumbled across a box of reasonably priced, lightly worn copies of National Lampoon. I searched the box for Lampoon issues from the first five years—1970 through 1975, when Harvard Lampoon alumni Henry Beard and Doug Kinney, along with fearless and talented contributors, turned Nat Lamp into the greatest America humor magazine—but no luck. People who own 1970-75 Nat Lamps hold on to them. I did, however, find and buy a later issue, from October 1976, and it’s still sharp. Each issue of Nat Lamp had a theme (such as “Paranoia,” “Isolationism and Tooth Care” and “Sin”) and October ’76’s theme is “The Funny Pages,” the name of Nat Lamp’s regular comic section, which took over most of its pages for just this month. The cover itself is a goofy parody of a Golden Age Superman comic.

STAFF PICKS :: OMAC TP VOL 01 OMACTIVATE :: AUGUST 08, 2012

August 8, 2012 at 1:41 pm By:

JUSTIN’S PICK :: OMAC TP VOL 01 OMACTIVATE: When DC kicked in with the New 52 last September, some of the secondary titles got lost in the shuffle. OMAC was one of those. If you’re a fan of bright, simple, action-packed comics, OMAC is a love letter to a bygone era. And Keith Giffen riffing on Jack Kirby is always worth a look.

LOOKING AHEAD :: OCTOBER 2012

August 8, 2012 at 10:00 am By:

Ah, October, how I look forward to all that your bring from pretty orange pumpkins to the Heroes Pop Swap to lovely and spooky comics.  Be sure to watch this space for details on the Pop Swap as well as Halloween comics.  Be sure to include some of the awesome comics on your list to the Great Pumpkin! Please let us know by the August 18 if we can order anything for you. Thanks!

A-Babies v. X-Babies #1: Some might say there’s been some childish behavior between the Avengers and the X-Men with the battle over the Phoenix and now Marvel is taking it straight to the nursery. Skottie Young is not only writing this fun foray into super babyhood, but he’s also giving us THREE baby covers in October, with variant covers for Uncanny Avengers #1 and A+X #1.  The real battle is now who’s cuter the A-Babies or the X-Babies.  (It might be hard for anyone to top Baby Cap’s little “a”.)  page 8 of Marvel Previews

REVIEW: RICHARD STARK’S PARKER: THE SCORE BY DARWYN COOKE

August 7, 2012 at 11:00 am By:

Important disclaimer: I am not an employee of IDW Publishing and I am not paid for my contributions to Heroesonline. So, bottom line: there is no bottom line, I do not get any money from extra copies of The Score that are sold thanks to a rave review. Here is another Bottom Line: If you are a fan of Crime Drama or Crime Fiction or Film Noir you must read Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker novels. The first two, The Hunter and The Outfit were outstanding, I didn’t think they could get any better, and boy oh boy, am I excited to tell you that I could not have been more wrong!

STAFF PICKS :: ATOMIC ROBO AND THE FLYING SHE-DEVILS #2 :: AUGUST 08, 2012

August 7, 2012 at 8:00 am By:

BRIDGIT’S PICK :: ATOMIC ROBO and the FLYING SHE-DEVILS #2: A few months ago, myself and seven other artist ladies were asked to draw ourselves as characters for Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener’s new Atomic Robo arc. So we did, and Scott adapted them to the style of the comic. Now there’s a slew of rag-tag ex-World War II pilots turned airship pirate doppelgangers of us all, running around in one of the best comic book series on the shelves! Atomic Robo is an entertaining mix of science, history, and shenanigans, and it’s one of the few comics that makes me literally laugh out loud. The adventures are so much fun and light- a sort of relief to read compared to the darker tone in a lot of comics these days. It’s a title I read regularly, and now with the Flying She-Devils, well… I can’t wait to see what we’re up to next!
