STAFF PICKS :: WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #42 :: FEBRUARY 26, 2014

February 25, 2014 at 9:37 am By:

staff_picks heather_staff_picksHEATHER’S PICK :: WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #42: When I first read that Wolverine and the X-Men was ending at issue #42, I had a moment of panic.  Was Marvel really cancelling my favorite book (again*)? WATXM has been my gateway into the X-Men.  Prior to, I had only read Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men and quit reading when he quit writing.  WATXM was originally in Seth’s stack of comics, but by the second issue in it was now firmly in my stack each month.

 Jason Aaron introduced me to some of my favorite characters in comics: Quentin Quire, Broo, Doop and my beloved bamfs.  He has taken the weird and unlovable and given them in a place in the readers’ hearts.  Who could have imagined the upset he would cause by shooting a brood in the head? Thankfully Broo has made a full recovery and has even gone on to save Iron Man in his own A+X story!
Reading issue #42 will be bittersweet for me.  I’ve looked forward to the continuing story of the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning each month.  I loved watching Wolverine as the unlikely headmaster of the school form relationships with both the students and faculty. I’ve enjoyed getting know a younger generation of mutants.  I’ve laughed at the background play of the bamfs and Doop. I’m emotionally connected to a group of fictional characters.
There’s been a rotating group of artists on this book from Nick Bradshaw to Ramon Perez to Chris Bachalo and they’ve all done a good job bringing Aaron’s story to life.  It will be interesting to see all of their styles merge on Aaron’s last issue.
Comics don’t always end in a clear transition.  We as fans don’t always get to tell our favorite creators thank you for their work.  With XATXM #42 on the shelves this week, I’d like to say thank you to Jason Aaron.  Thank you for crafting a comic full of characters that I love and look forward to reading each month.  Thanks for starting my X-Men phase of comic reading.  Thanks for bringing Nightcrawler back and making him a pirate!!
I’m also happy to know that the story of the Jean Grey School doesn’t end here and WATXM will return with a new number one issue next month with a new Jason at the helm.  Latour, you have big beard to fill!

*I loved Thor the Mighty Avenger by Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee so very much.

STAFF PICKS :: DISNEY MUPPETS CHARACTER ENCYCLOPEDIA HC :: FEBRUARY 26, 2014

February 24, 2014 at 4:07 pm By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksHave you seen all the Trailers for The Great Muppet Heist?  It looks like it will be one of the funniest movies of the year. To celebrate this event– in the tradition of The Handbook of the Marvel Universe (but less dry and much more fun!), Disney/Muppets/Lucas/ESPN in association with every subsidiary that has slipped my mind,  proudly presents The Muppets Character Encyclopedia.  From the pages I’ve seen in preview, this book guarantees to be a reading riot and offers some fun backstory for many of the secondary (but still beloved) characters like the Swedish Chef and Gonzo’s girlfriend Camilla the Chicken.  This is a must-have for any fans of the Muppets.

STAFF PICKS :: Superior Foes of Spider-Man TP Vol. 1: Getting the Band Back Together :: FEBRUARY 26, 2014

February 24, 2014 at 9:55 am By:

staff_picks wheatley_staff_picksJason’s Pick :: Superior Foes of Spider-Man TP Vol. 1: Getting the Band Back Together: Say hello to the best book you haven’t been reading. It’s easy to dismiss Superior Foes as a cash grab to capitalize on the popularity of Dan Slott’s Superior Spider-Man title, but this book really has nothing to do with its parent title outside of the name. Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber have taken a handful of Spider-Man’s C-list foes and crafted a dark comic look into the lives of those on the wrong side of the law. This is Marvel’s answer to the Flash’s Rogues – they’re not out to take over the world…they just want to get paid. Take the criminal’s insider narrative of “Goodfellas,” the capers and twists of the “Ocean’s 11” series, and the humor and visual storytelling of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye, mix them together, and you’ve gotSuperior Foes. This book really seems to be flying under the radar, so grab this first trade paperback and see what you’ve been missing.

HEROESCON 2014 :: WESTIN HOTEL RATE IS LIVE!

February 21, 2014 at 4:15 pm By:

westin_lobby-420x315After each day of HeroesCon comes to an end, the place to be is the Westin. Whether you just want to hang out in the lobby bar or you’re attending our Annual Art Auction the Westin is where it’s at.

Reservations at the Westin Charlotte are now open at the special HeroesCon rate of $129/night! We strongly suggest you reserve your rooms as soon as you can because although we have access to nearly the entire hotel, we sellout and fill the place every year. If you’ve never stayed at the Westin before, get ready for luxury, the place is NICE!

You can go to our Hotels page to see a complete list of area hotels we recommend, including the Westin; or just click right here to go right to the reservation page. If you have any problems, or if particular nights are listed as sold-out, please let us know so we can address that. They group the rooms in blocks so sometimes they’ll show up on the computer as sold-out, but Shelton has a magic wand to wave at that stuff.

Buy your tickets and book your room today!

STAFF PICKS :: FBP TP VOL. 1 (AND MORE!) :: FEBRUARY 19, 2014

seth_smlSETH’S PICKS: This week I’m eschewing our regular Staff Pick formula of choosing a single book to spotlight in favor of picking three new books that should be on your radar.  First up is the debut trade paperback of FBP.  It features the interesting premise of science gone awry, which is brilliantly illustrated by Robbi Rodriguez and our own Rico Renzi.  It’s also hard not to mention the work of Nathan Fox, who expertly matches the tone and style of the interior art with his always inventive covers.  Even more than that, this first collection includes the title’s first seven issues for a mere $9.99!

FBPTPB

Next up is Undertow #1.  Aside from being yet another new Image debut issue (speculators ahoy!), this aquatic based series features Atlantis as a superpower, and plenty of pulpy adventure elements, which have been a regular source of comics joy for me in recent years.

undertow

Finally, there’s the perfectly titled Loki: Ragnarok and Roll.  This new series from Boom Studios offers a twist to the story of Odin banishing trickster god Loki to Earth.  Rather than attempt conquest of the planet through violence and manipulation, in this series, Loki turns to the power of Rock and Roll.  Cover artist Alexis Ziritt is a beast of an illustrator whose work you’re bound to be knowing more of soon.  This favorite artist of the Heroes Con Drink and Draw is the perfect person to provide covers for this concept.boom_loki_001_a

staff_picks rico_staff_picksRICO’S PICK :: THE WHITE SUITS: Who are The White Suits? Sharp-dressed killers taking on the New York underworld?  Is there more to them than that? From the looks of things, Frank J. Barbiere and Toby Cypress are set to deliver a great looking crime series packed with action and mystery. Check out a quick preview of series here, I’m hooked!

STAFF PICKS :: A+X #17 :: FEBRUARY 19, 2014

February 17, 2014 at 9:28 am By:

staff_picks heather_staff_picksHEATHER’S PICK :: A+X #17: This team up had me sold with one word: Broo. That’s right, Jason Aaron has made a little nerdy brood one of my favorite X-Men.  I can’t wait to see how a job shadowing with Tony Stark goes.  It will be interesting to see how Broo improves Stark Industries and perhaps locks down a future job.
I’ve also really enjoyed Gerry Duggan’s writing on Deadpool and I hope to see that same humor in the second team up of this last A+X issue of Captain America and Cyclops.  Do either of these heroes have the capability to take snark to the level of the Merc with the mouth?

STAFF PICKS:: THE BOJEFFRIES SAGA

February 11, 2014 at 3:42 pm By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksIt’s finally here!  Alan Moore and Steve Parkhouse’s grand finale to The Bojeffries Saga.  This comic delight was first published in short segments in Britain’s Warrior (along with Miracleman and V for Vendetta–whoa!) and continued throughout the ’90s in A1 and Dalgoda. This is a chilling and hilarious and quite frankly delightful take of the macabre goings on in the Bojeffries household.  Imagine if Charles Addams published by The Village Voice instead of the droll  New Yorker.  What a family!! AND It’s only 15.00!!!  this is for all fans of Alan Moore, the Far Side, Gahan Wilson, Basil Wolverton and the aforementioned master Charles Addams.  Don’t miss this!
