JUSTIN’S PICK :: REGGIE-12 : Brain Ralph is one of my personal favorites. I regularly point zombie fans in the direction of his criminally under-appreciated book Daybreak, and its narrative’s neat employment of point of view in a post apocalyptic setting. Stylistically, Ralph’s work is bold and organic, with a deceptive and tasteful simplicity. Now he turns his attention to the likes of Tezuka‘s Astro Boy, and the tropes of manga. I expect the subject matter to dovetail nicely with Ralph’s talents, and look forward to this book greatly.

HEATHER’S PICK :: X-MEN #5: You guys, Battle of the Atom did not disappoint! I am enthusiastically selecting X-Men #5 this week which is part 3 of the Battle of the Atom event. I really like the way the story is flowing through all the X-Men books. I will even be picking up the Uncanny X-Men issues which is the only title included in this event that I am not currently reading. I won’t include any spoilers here as this is such a new story line, but I squealed out loud to see a certain character reveal. I can’t wait to see how the tensions between X-Men of past, present, and future play out across some of my favorite books.

SETH’S PICK :: BEST OF MILLIGAN AND MCCARTHY HC: We live in an era where an endless wave of past stories are being newly collected (or re-collected) and remastered for new audiences. As with anything, this wave doesn’t always yield wonderful results. However, this week offers you a chance to pick up a true gem of previously published, never before collected comics. Dark Horse’s The Best of Milligan and McCarthy collects over 250 pages from these idiosyncratic creators. Throughout their careers, Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy have exhibited a wide range and use of satire in their work. Be it at Marvel, DC, Vertigo, or 2000 A.D., these creators are always reliable. This new hardcover collects many of their influential stories from the eighties, like Paradax, Skin, Rogan Gosh, and Freakwave. These are quirky, psychedelic, multi-layered comics that will both befuddle and entertain upon repeated readings. If you’re already a fan, here’s a way to collect all of these stories in one handy volume. If you’re not familiar with these works, flip through a copy at Heroes this week, and prepare to encounter mind-blowing comics from two greats of the ’80’s British comics invasion.

JASON’S PICK :: SHIELD BY STERANKO: COMPLETE COLLECTION: Steranko. The man is a legend, belonging to that great pantheon of artists – such as
Kirby and
Ditko – where one name is all you need for anyone to know exactly who you’re talking about. His marriage of visual storytelling and pop art sensibilities changed the way many people looked at comics. His rendition of Army-sergeant-turned-secret-
agent Nick Fury and spy organization SHIELD in the Silver Age has influenced the look and attitude of those characters ever since, and now Marvel is collecting Steranko’s run in one volume. I’m excited to revisit the modern origins of Fury, SHIELD, Hydra, Scorpio, Baron Strucker, and more – not to mention being dazzled by some amazing, amazing art from….Steranko. (Need I say more?)

JUSTIN’S PICK :: DIESEL SWEETIES: I’M A ROCKER I ROCK OUT: Being a child of the 80s, 8-bit graphics appeal to my lizard brain. I am quite susceptible to their charms, charms that clearly have antecedents in 50s ad mascots, the work of Ernie Bushmiller, and so on. Richard Stevens’ strip Diesel Sweeties only compounds that appeal with a heavy dose of postmodern irony and self-deprecation. This volume – titled I’m a Rocker I Rock Out – is a best-of sampling of the long-running webcomic. For those of you who think “webcomic” is a dirty word…I count myself among you, but we must bear in mind: print is the final trial. It separates the men from the boys.
