STAFF PICKS :: CAPTAIN EASY VOLUME 4 :: DECEMBER 04, 2013

December 3, 2013 at 9:48 am By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: CAPTAIN EASY VOLUME 4: This is the fourth and final volume of the over-sized collection of Captain Easy full page Sundays beautifully written, drawn and colored by the great Roy Crane.  This is one of the most influential strips of all time.  Crane successfully blended fast paced globe trotting adventures with a big foot comedic art style  like no other strip had ever done–before or since. Crane left the successful Wash Tubbs/Captain Easy strip in 1943 to start his own feature Buz Sawyer.  By that time, the world had changed; WWII forced the newspaper strips to face the realities of war and real violence. The days of the lickety-wop deliriously fun escapades in a world filled with damsels in distress, tiny European kingdoms, a perpetually Wild West and maps that led to buried treasure were over. However, all those delightful staples of the depression era  world of the dangerous– but always reliable–Captain Easy are on display for all to enjoy. This four volume collection is the ideal series where any modern reader can get an understanding and appreciation of the scope and history of the Adventure strip.  How important is Crane and the Sunday Captain Easy? If Roy Crane did not directly  influence your favorite cartoonist , believe me, the artists who influenced your current favorites were influenced by Crane and his marvelous work. Besides all that–Captain Easy is a blast to read  PICK UP ANY VOLUME; Need a recap? Easy gets into trouble, then he punches his way out and then, he gets into trouble…Plus there are beautiful girls and Tigers– lots and lots of Tigers.

STAFF PICKS :: DEADPOOL ANNUAL #1 :: NOVEMBER 27, 2013

November 27, 2013 at 8:54 am By:

staff_picks rico_staff_picksRICO’S PICK :: DEADPOOL ANNUAL #1: One-shots, anthologies, and annuals, these are the odd ball comics I’m always drawn to. Retailers and publishers alike have trouble selling them on a consistent basis though because of the inherent uneven nature of these things and an inability to please everyone. This annual of a title I don’t read on a monthly basis grabbed me because of the great creative team. Start with a hilarious and brilliantly executed take on the old Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck – wabbit season/duck season cartoons by the mighty Tradd Moore and Jordie Bellaire. Add a story by Thrilling Adventure Hour creators Ben Acker and Ben Blacker and finish it off with great art by Evan “Doc” Shaner and Veronica Gandini. It seems like a perfect formula for a really fun comic book to me.DeadpoolAnnual

STAFF PICKS :: LOIS LANE A CELEBRATION OF 75 YEARS HC :: NOVEMBER 27, 2013

November 26, 2013 at 3:38 pm By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksSo what happens when a god falls in love with or… you know….consorts with a mortal-type babe?  If Zeus is any kind of model upon which we can base an hypothesis, we know that his dalliances made for an unending number of problematic situations. And not just for the gods! Imagine Leda trying to explain the whole swan thing to her dad.  Yeah right.
But what if a god was reared with a solid moral background supplied by good-hearted (and liberal??) Midwestern parents? Well then, a supreme being just might end up with the intestinal fortitude to go all the way (as it were)  in an inter-species relationship and still keep the Cosmos mostly intact. And if this super-being is Kal-El of Krypton and the woman he loves is Lois Lane a smart ambitious and just plain nosey gal by nature, he’d have to really keep on the super-tips of his super-toes. Sure the old secret identity roundelay (think of an Episode of Frasier with all sexual tension gone) got boring after a few short decades (a mere blink of an eye to an immortal!) but whenever the god’s creators (explain that one!) stepped outside this ol’ reliable  conceit, comic readers discovered that Lois Lane is a real character with real story potential. Don’t believe me? Well then try this new volume that collects stories reprinted from ACTION COMICS #1-2, 6, 484, 600 and 662, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #631, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN #2-3, MAN OF STEEL #2,  SHOWCASE #9, SUPERMAN #29, 33-34, 58 and 168, SUPERMAN 80-PAGE GIANT 2011 #1, SUPERMAN: LOIS LANE #1, SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #5, 16, 23, 42 and 106, and WONDER WOMAN #170!

STAFF PICKS :: SPIDER-MAN AND WOLVERINE BY WELLS AND MADUREIRA HC :: NOVEMBER 27, 2013

November 26, 2013 at 9:50 am By:

staff_picksjustin_staff_picksJUSTIN’S PICK :: SPIDER-MAN AND WOLVERINE BY WELLS AND MADUREIRA HC: I’m just gonna come out with it: in comics, Joe Madureira is to the 90s what Michael Golden was to the 80s; that is, Mad’s relatively modest body of work is comparatively massive in its influence. Traces of his kinetic, amped-up brand of storytelling are all over the stands today. With his stint on Uncanny X-Men, Mad conquered the comic book world. And while I am a bit disappointed he’s forgone proper inkers on his past few projects, the results have still been pretty great. This volume collects Mad’s yarns with scribe Zeb Wells, originally aired in the pages of Avenging Spider-Man (which I blabbed about here) and Savage Wolverine. A lot of these issues sold out at Heroes, and with a line-up consisting of Spidey, Wolvie, Red Hulk, Elektra, Mole Man, the Kingpin, and more, it’s not hard to see why. These stories are solid reminders of the joy and wonder that initially drew us – one and all – to comics.

STAFF PICKS :: BLACK SCIENCE #1 :: NOVEMBER 27, 2013

seth_staff_picksSETH’S PICK :: BLACK SCIENCE #1:  If you missed Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera’s run on Secret Avengers, you should treat yourself go back and read it.  It was full of imaginative comic craft, and  felt unique among the other Marvel comic it stood beside.  As memorable as that run was, I wondered what kind of comic these guys would create if they had complete control over it.  That question is finally answered this week in the form of their new series Black Science.  Conceptually, it’s a sprawling science fiction epic featuring rogue anarchist scientists who break the barriers of reality and find themselves amid an endless amount of alien worlds.  This is the kind of big concept Remender seems to relish, but is made all the more interesting by the bombastic art of Scalera.  It’s been a while since there was so much early buzz surrounding a new creator owned sci fi series.  This book seems primed to not only live up to its hype, but very likely surpass it. blacksci

STAFF PICKS :: THE FIFTH BEATLE: THE BRIAN EPSTEIN STORY :: NOVEMBER 20, 2013

November 19, 2013 at 2:46 pm By:

staff_picks rico_staff_picksRICO’S PICK :: THE FIFTH BEATLE: THE BRIAN EPSTEIN STORY: This is a book that has been in the making for quite some time and I can’t wait to hold a copy in my hands. It’s written by Vivek J. Tiwary with the majority of the art handled by Andrew Robinson and a small sequence by Kyle Baker. Honestly, Andrew Robinson’s artwork is the draw for me on this project. From what I’ve seen in previews he has unloaded his entire bag of tricks on this project, from stylized cartooned likenesses of people everyone is bound to recognize to fully painted realism to trippy psychedelia and much more, it’s all here on display in the Fifth Beatle. For anyone who has ever dipped a brush in watercolor paint, you understand the reflection of Epstein in the panel below is pure witchcraft.

fifth-beatle2

Fair warning, this isn’t a light-hearted bio comic, Epstein was dealing with some heavy stuff and it’s addressed here. This is his story after all.  We’ll have 2 versions of this book, both hardcover. The collector’s edition features a unique, textured cover and a section of bonus materials including unique Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers.

STAFF PICKS :: THE MYSTERIOUS UNDERGROUND MEN :: NOVEMBER 20, 2013

November 19, 2013 at 8:36 am By:

staff_picksjustin_staff_picksJUSTIN’S PICK :: THE MYSTERIOUS UNDERGROUND MEN HC: Like most of my generation, I went through a manga/anime phase. I call it a phase not in derision; it was just a passing interest. There are a few exceptions, however: Kenichi Sonoda’s Gunsmith Cats, the animated Ninja Scroll (clips of which I witnessed at one of my very first Heroes Con attendances) and the work of Osamu Tezuka. Famed as the creator of Astro Boy and likened to Walt Disney, Tezuka’s work deserves every accolade it garners for its charm, impact and timelessness. Picturebox presents this first-time English translation of one of the man’s earlier works. This volume is also notable for appearing in its original format, in full color. It boasts a synopsis and range of reference points that is absolutely intriguing. From the solicitation: The Mysterious Underground Men tells the story of Mimio the talking rabbit as he struggles to prove his humanity while helping his friends save earth from an invasion of angry humanoid termites. Sign me up, Mimio!

STAFF PICKS :: IMAGINE AGENTS #2 :: NOVEMBER 20, 2013

November 18, 2013 at 3:21 pm By:

staff_picks karla_staff_picksKARLA’S PICK :: IMAGINE AGENTS #2: I had quite the ensemble of beloved imaginary cohorts as I child, which is why when my fellow Heroes staffer (and Store Manager extraordinaire) Justin recommended Imagine Agents to me last month, I picked it up and devoured it! (Don’t be silly…I didn’t actually EAT the book, I’m not Tony Chu!) Imagine Agents is a new book from BOOM! Studios written by Brian Jones and illustrated by Bachan. It’s an intriguing concept about an organization of “Men In Black” style agents who’s job it is to wrangle up imaginary friends after the children they befriended have outgrown them(tragic!! Right??!!). Some of those imaginary counterparts are the best friends and confidants to the children they belong to, and others are chaotic terrors who reek havoc and mayhem wherever they go, leaving their pre-adolescent benefactors to take the blame. I truly enjoyed the heck out of issue #1 (which we still have in stock!) and can’t wait to see what happens next in this 4 part series!imagineagents_02_cvr_copy(2)
