STAFF PICKS :: FANTASTIC FOUR #1 :: NOVEMBER 14, 2012
JUSTIN’S PICK :: FANTASTIC FOUR #1 :: Based on the preview book that accompanied the kickoff of Marvel NOW a few weeks ago, the new Fantastic Four title is getting back to basics, that is: a family of adventurers, adventuring. In just four pages, writer Matt Fraction demonstrated he can ably handle the dynamics of bickering relatives. As for stalwart penciller Mark Bagley, he’s won me over after years of indifference, and his ever-improving style looks great on Marvel’s first family. Pick this one up and get in on the ground floor.
That is one great looking Ben Grimm
I think I can gauge my fandom of any artist based solely on their rendition of Thing. Seriously.
I think it will be a hit. Bagley’s work is always nice. Sort of funny to see the Thing wearing those tights.
For those of us of over a–ahem–certain age, Ben Grimm was a one-trick (but damn good) pony– the Joe Sinnott inked Thing and all other artists copied it until John Byrne took over the FF. From that point on–the appearance of the Thing set the tone for the book. Some better than others, but always different!
Nice one Justin!!
The world is a wonderful place and it is always a little more wonderful whenever the Marvel flagship is handled with care, respect, intelligence and humor it (and we) deserve–I can’t wait!
I probably should check this out. I haven’t read Fanstasic Four in years, but this could be the one to bring me back. I am, on the other hand, excited to read “FF” with Allred on art!
