August 20, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: MARVEL 1602 10th Anniversary Hardcover: So what if the Marvel Universe began 359 years earlier than the publication of Fantastic Four #1? This is a hardcover edition of an 8 issue mini-series written by Neil Gaiman with art by Andy Kubert and covers by Scott McKowen that was originally published in 2003.  This series was so popular it spawned a number of follow-up series. The Virgin Queen sits on the throne of England; an empire that is about to experience a number of meta-human and magical occurrences. You’ll see many of the A-Team Marvel players get an Elizabethan make-over.  But what about Captain America?  You’ll just have to read it to find out.   If you missed it the first time, you owe it to yourself to take a trip back in time and enjoy this well crafted tale.

HEROES DISCUSSION GROUP RETURNS WITH SAGA :: SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

August 19, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Discussion Group, EVENTS

SagaThe Heroes Discussion Group returns!!  Thanks to all of you who have requested we continue this delightful endeavor.

What is it?  We select a graphic novel and on a scheduled Saturday afternoon we meet at Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and then repair to a local watering hole (or bakery).  There we eat, drink and have a full blown discussion about the book we’ve selected.

Our mission is simple:  How often have you read a terrific (or really bad) comic and wanted to discuss it and for one reason or another, you could not.  We offer a forum where every one is on the same page and we do our darnedest (pardon my French!) to keep the discussion on track for a few hours.

In the past 4 years (!) and almost 50 meetings, we’ve tackled every kind of comic book from Maus to Scott Pilgrim to From Hell to The Walking Dead to Sandman to All-Star Superman. The discussions are always lively and above all fun! For our re-inaugural, we thought we’d try something a bit different.  We want to examine a series that is currently on-going and (obviously) unfinished.

The book is Saga written by Brian K Vaughan and drawn by Fiona Staples (what a great comic book name!). SAGA is currently one of the best-selling comics and it is certainly the most buzz worthy outside our four-color world.

We will be discussing the first 13 issues— which have been collected so far into 2 trades (with 13 a single issue).  As always, Heroes is offering the 10% DISCUSSION GROUP DISCOUNT on the two trades as well as #13.  But as an added incentive, if you purchase both collections and #13 at the same time, we are offering you the package for only 24.00!!! REMEMBER to inform the clerk of the discount when you check out!!

Topics will include (but these are just suggestions)

  • How does the artwork and especially the coloring sets the tone for the story?
  • How do we as readers react to the reputation or past work of a creator? (Example, I have trouble reading anything by Vaughan without looking for parallels to LOST)
  • Can this kind of sub-textural investigation help or hinder a readers experience?
  • What sets Saga apart from all the other Sci-Fi and Fantasy books that are being published.
  • Where do you see the book going in the months ahead?
  • Does a book like Saga (or any other comic for that matter) benefit from ‘binge’ reading as opposed to reading each issue as it is released?
  • And lots and lots more…..

If you are a big fan of Saga or if you dislike it or if you just want to break bread and talk with folks who have like interests, then please consider stopping by Heroes on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 at 1:00PM. There is no pressure to contribute!  You can just come by to listen.  All we ask is that you keep an open mind. And if you enjoy yourself (and we think you will!), mark your calendars to join us on Saturday, November 2ND at 1:00PM as we celebrate a belated Halloween by discussing Hellboy/B.P.R.D. (specific titles to be announced later–but if you have a particular volume in mind either respond on this Blog or our Facebook page!) And for the Yuletide???  We have a wonderful surprise in store.

See you there!

STAFF PICKS :: ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR #9 & DOCTOR STRANGE AND DOCTOR DOOM : TRIUMPH AND TORMENT :: August 14, 2013

August 08, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICKS :: ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR #9: Alright Sherman, set the Way-Back Machine to 1977 when we were still using abaci for advanced math and Marvel’s first family broke up yet again only to re-unite just in time to (SPOILER!) defeat Dr. Doom in an action packed 5 issue epic that culminated in the landmark (and rather clever) 200th issue. And then Marv Wolfman really started cooking (with gas!!- there were no microwaves back then either) as he began an 11 issue deep-space saga that was more fun than any one should be allowed to have by law!! ESSENTIAL FANTASTIC FOUR #9 is a 500 page B&W edition collects FANTASTIC FOUR#184-188 and #190-207, and ANNUAL #12-13.
Lots of different artists, but hey, Joe Sinnott was around to ink everybody…so it’s all really good.

DOCTOR STRANGE AND DOCTOR DOOM: TRIUMPH AND TORMENT: So Victor von Doom’s mother’s soul is in Hell. No wonder he is such a grouch. So he teams up with Stephen Strange to try to wrest her immortal soul from the fiery grasp of Mephisto.  This Trade Paperback collects DOCTOR STRANGE AND DOCTOR DOOM : TRIUMPH AND TORMENT (with art by a young Mike Mignola!!!) along with material from DOCTOR STRANGE #57, ASTONISHING TALES #8, and MARVEL FANFARE #16 &#43. If memory serves this Roger Stern penned story-line was really well done and hey– you get a glimpse at Mignola’s first trip to Hell.

STAFF PICKS :: IN THE DAYS OF THE MOB HC :: AUGUST 7, 2013

August 01, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

staff_picksandy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: IN THE DAYS OF THE MOB HC: Jack Kirby was always breaking new ground.  When he left Marvel in 1970 over creative and financial differences, he landed at DC comics where he created the justly famous Fourth World series.  But he didn’t stop there. He created a line of black and white magazines that were just a few years before their time.  DC collected one of those magazines, Spirit World last year and now they proudly re-present, In the Days of the Mob. Kirby was once again way ahead of the curve as gangster stories would take over Hollywood about a year later.  These stories represent Kirby at one of his many creative heights.  You don’t want to miss this. Collects IN THE DAYS OF THE MOB #1 and stories from AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS #1 and 10.

STAFF PICKS :: SUPERMAN SILVER AGE NEWSPAPER DAILIES HC 1958-1961 :: JULY 31, 2013

July 25, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: SUPERMAN SILVER AGE NEWSPAPER DAILIES HC 1958-1961: The Superman newspaper strip was very popular and rather long lived beginning in 1939 and ending in 1966. Our good friends at IDW/Library of American Comics plan to reprint the entire 27 year run. And instead of starting back at the beginning (those first years have already been reprinted a number of times) this inaugural volume reprints (for the first time!!) all the daily strips from December 1958 to July of 1961 .  The stories were written by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel along with Otto Bender and others and features art by Curt Swan, Wayne Boring and Stan Kaye.  One of the highlights is a retelling of Siegel’s unforgettable “Superman Returns to Krypton” storyline.  For anyone who wants to try a sampling of the strips before deciding to to buy the book, look here!

STAFF PICKS :: TALES OF BATMAN: ARCHIE GOODWIN HC :: JULY 17, 2013

July 16, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: TALES OF BATMAN: ARCHIE GOODWIN HARDCOVER: You’re probably familiar with the award winning Batman/Manhunter story serialized in Detective Comics 437-443 from 1974 written by Archie Goodwin and illustrated by then newcomer Walt Simonson.  It is justifiably famous and considered a classic.  Now DC is offering a very affordable (40 bucks for almost 500 pages!) collection of Archie Goodwin penned Batman tales that includes the complete Manhunter saga along with the equally famous Batman: Night Cries GN with gorgeous art by Scott HamptonDetective Annual #3 with art by Dan Jurgens, 2 short stories from Batman in Black and White with art by Jose Munoz and Gary Gianni and Siege–the story Goodwin left unfinished at the time of his death (and completed by James Robinson) with art by Marshall Rogers from Legends of the Dark Knight #132-136. Goodwin was one of the best writers from the pre- British Invasion mainstream. This is an ideal showcase of Goodwin’s formidable talents.

Staff Picks :: Astro City #2 :: JULY 10, 2013

July 08, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

ANDY’S PICK :: ASTRO CITY #2: This is unofficially, the 61st issue of ASTRO CITY– the Kurt Busiek (writer) and Brent Anderson (artist) and Alex Ross (Covers and Design)  love letter to mainstream super-hero concepts. Others have tried to offer an homage/pastiche to heroes from an earlier era,  but more often than not, they end up as either a parody (Tom Strong) or a blatant rip-off (Supreme) Where others have failed, Astro City succeeds because the creative team love comic books, they love their characters and above all they love their fictional town.  You will feel the tingle of nostalgia and the joy that comes when you read a well crafted and (on its own terms) believable super-hero comic book. You owe it to yourself to give this book a try–especially if you were once at home on the mainstream side of Heroes and have since  moved across to the other side of the store.

STAFF PICKS :: DISNEY MICKEY MOUSE COLOR SUNDAYS HC VOL 01 CALL of the WILD

June 28, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

After the departure of original artists Ub Iwerks and Win Smith on the newly created Mickey Mouse newspaper strip, a young artist named Floyd Gottfredson was pulled from his steady job as an in-betweener in the Disney Animation department to temporarily fill-in.  Gottfredson’s  temporary substitution began in April 1930 and continued  until his retirement in October 1975.  His decade long tenure on the strip is legendary and worthy of a high quality (but very reasonably priced!) collection. During the 30s and early 40s, Mickey Mouse was one of the most popular and best executed strips around.  This is the fifth volume of the project complete work of Gottfredson on Mickey.  DISNEY MICKEY MOUSE COLOR SUNDAYS HC VOL 01 CALL of the WILD is the first volume to collect the Sunday strips. Like many comics of its day, the daily was intended for an older audience while the Color Sundays–whether a continuous story-line or as a gag page–   were designed to appeal to the young as well as the old.  These full color stories are fresher, breezier, funnier than the daily adventures, but still chalk full of the great Gottfredson storytelling, solid characterization in a fully realized world.    They are a perfect accompaniment to the old Mickey Mouse cartoons and they are ideal for younger readers. Enjoy!!!

STAFF PICKS :: ARCHIE HC VOL 02 COMPLETE DAILY NEWSPAPER COMICS

June 24, 2013 By: Andy Mansell Category: DISCUSS, Staff Picks

The  Classic Comics Cavalcade continues on unabated to the quarterback!

After volume one of the Archie Newspaper Strip Library collected the first three years of the Archie comic strip, the good folks at IDW have decided to jump ahead almost a decade to 1960.  Enjoy the riotous adventures of perennial high-school student Archie Andrews and the entire cast of well defined supporting characters– the classmates and faculty of Riverdale High. With these strips writer/artist Bob Montana perfects his craft and begins his finest period as a daily cartoonist.  This volume includes every daily from September of 1960 to April (SPRING BREAK!!) of 1963.    Plus– Betty! and Veronica! along my all-time faves–Miss Grundy!! and Cafeteria Lady Miss Beazly!! Don’t judge me.  ARCHIE HC VOL 02 COMPLETE DAILY NEWSPAPER COMICS 1960-1963 is a great choice for fans of classic humor strips and an absolute must-have for all Archie Fans.
