STAFF PICKS :: HALF PAST DANGER #3 :: JULY 17, 2013

July 16, 2013 at 3:24 pm By:

SETH’S PICK :: HALF PAST DANGER #3:  There are several interesting titles out this week (Batman ’66 #1, Paul Pope’s Death of Haggard West, The Love and Rockets Companion, Seagle and Kristiansen’s Genius, Brandon Graham’s Walrus), but I’m opting to bring Half Past Danger to your attention.  This action adventure series from IDW is pretty straightforward, but very much a breath of fresh air.  It’s essentially an adventure series, but in the first two issues has already delivered on its promise of Dames, Dinosaurs and Danger.  It features all of those elements (and ninjas!) set against the backdrop of World War II.  More than that, it’s executed wonderfully by writer/artist Stephen Mooney and colorist Jordie Bellaire, who is quickly becoming to colorists what Francesco Francavilla is to cover artists.  This series feels like it was produced by people who love old action and adventure comics and films, and doesn’t shy away from displaying its exuberance.  Best of all, this is the perfect kind of comic to offer you a break from the big, shiny summer events of  super hero books. halfpast

STAFF PICKS :: TALES OF BATMAN: ARCHIE GOODWIN HC :: JULY 17, 2013

July 16, 2013 at 11:05 am By:

staff_picks andy_staff_picksANDY’S PICK :: TALES OF BATMAN: ARCHIE GOODWIN HARDCOVER: You’re probably familiar with the award winning Batman/Manhunter story serialized in Detective Comics 437-443 from 1974 written by Archie Goodwin and illustrated by then newcomer Walt Simonson.  It is justifiably famous and considered a classic.  Now DC is offering a very affordable (40 bucks for almost 500 pages!) collection of Archie Goodwin penned Batman tales that includes the complete Manhunter saga along with the equally famous Batman: Night Cries GN with gorgeous art by Scott HamptonDetective Annual #3 with art by Dan Jurgens, 2 short stories from Batman in Black and White with art by Jose Munoz and Gary Gianni and Siege–the story Goodwin left unfinished at the time of his death (and completed by James Robinson) with art by Marshall Rogers from Legends of the Dark Knight #132-136. Goodwin was one of the best writers from the pre- British Invasion mainstream. This is an ideal showcase of Goodwin’s formidable talents.

STAFF PICKS :: BATMAN ’66 #1 :: JULY 17, 2013

July 15, 2013 at 10:40 am By:

staff_picksjustin_staff_picksJUSTIN’S PICK :: BATMAN ’66 #1: I was gonna start this write-up with a “Holy ______, Batman!” joke, but let’s buck convention and skip it. It seems nowadays, the majority of Batman’s fanbase exhibits a slavish devotion to the “dark”, “realistic”, “grim ‘n gritty” take on the character that Neal Adams initiated, and Frank Miller solidified. It’s often taken for granted just how outlandish and ridiculous the entire premise of Batman is (but I guess when you think critically, that’s any superhero). On the other end of the spectrum, you have the TV show’s garish, Warholian take on everyone’s favorite playboy vigilante, and that interpretation was also pushed to its grossest extremes, unquestionably. But visually, the 60s Batman show was a technicolor wonderland, taking full advantage of the potential of its nascent medium, just as the character had a couple decades earlier in the comics. Does it play on nostalgia? Certainly. Could it go horribly, terribly awry? Of course! Could it be a lot of fun? Well, that depends on your sensibilities. For me, a kid who grew up on reruns and dusty old comics, it’s likely to be right up my alley. The quality talents of Jeff Parker and Jonathan Case don’t hurt the book’s chances, and Mike Allred covers are always a bonus.

HEROESCON 2014 :: GUEST LIST ANNOUNCEMENT!

July 12, 2013 at 11:13 am By:

HeroesCon 2013 was amazing. Thanks to everyone on both sides of the table who attended. Dates for HeroesCon 2014 are set, we’ll be back in the same space at the Charlotte Convention Center on June 20-22, 2014. Let’s start things off with a bang for HeroesCon 2014 with our first Guest List Announcement!

It’s been a few years since legendary comic artist ARTHUR ADAMS has graced HeroesCon with his presence but he will be back in 2014! Arthur is known for his ability to pack a page with detail without making it look cluttered. He’s been a huge influence on a few generations of artists now while he’s still going strong and improving his craft!

STEPHANIE BUSCEMA is taking a few days off from her busy schedule of illustrating books and painting comic covers to join us too! Stephanie’s classic precision painting style is in demand and we’re excited to welcome her back to the show next year!

If you’ve never met SCOTT C. don’t miss this opportunity! He’s truly one of the most charming creators you’ll meet and that character really comes through in his art. We love Scott!

KELLY SUE DECONNICK and the Carol Corps were in full force at HeroesCon 2013. Let’s see if we can make this celebration an annual event! Also, be on the lookout for Kelly Sue’s new book, Pretty Deadly, it looks killer!!kellysuedeconnick

We’re pleased to announce KEVIN EASTMAN’s first appearance at HeroesCon! Kevin is the co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the head honcho at Heavy Metal Magazine. Don’t miss this opportunity to say hello to a modern comics legend!kevin_eastman

MATT FRACTION has a long list of accomplishments in comics but maybe the most impressive is taking a B-list superhero like Hawkeye and making him the star of a book people can’t wait to read each month. From serious to super silly, Matt is a writer who has shown a great range and we’re always happy to have him at HeroesCon!fox_mfraction

One of our neighbors just happens to be a great at making comics. JASON LATOUR just finished a run as the writer of Winter Soldier and the artist on Sledgehammer ’44. He’s got a bunch of soon-to-be-announced things cooking and we’re really looking forward to the just-announced at the Image Expo, Southern Bastards which Jason will be drawing!

RYAN OTTLEY makes you feel the pain when things get hyper violent in Invincible but he’s just as good at the quiet stuff and superheroics too! Make sure you get a sketch from him at HeroesCon, the crazier your request, the better!

RICK REMENDER is coming back to HeroesCon for the first time in years. After several succesful runs on creator-owned books like Fear Agent and Strange Girl Rick took his talents to Marvel for an acclaimed run as the writer of Uncanny X-Force. Now, aside from strong work on Captain America and Uncanny Avengers, Remender is coming back with two great looking books from Image, Black Science and Deadly Class!

Tickets will be on sale soon and of course we’ll have many more guest list announcements and other HeroesCon news coming your way throughout the year!

Staff Picks :: Astro City #2 :: JULY 10, 2013

July 8, 2013 at 12:30 pm By:

ANDY’S PICK :: ASTRO CITY #2: This is unofficially, the 61st issue of ASTRO CITY– the Kurt Busiek (writer) and Brent Anderson (artist) and Alex Ross (Covers and Design)  love letter to mainstream super-hero concepts. Others have tried to offer an homage/pastiche to heroes from an earlier era,  but more often than not, they end up as either a parody (Tom Strong) or a blatant rip-off (Supreme) Where others have failed, Astro City succeeds because the creative team love comic books, they love their characters and above all they love their fictional town.  You will feel the tingle of nostalgia and the joy that comes when you read a well crafted and (on its own terms) believable super-hero comic book. You owe it to yourself to give this book a try–especially if you were once at home on the mainstream side of Heroes and have since  moved across to the other side of the store.

STAFF PICKS :: LOST CAT HC :: JULY 10, 2013

July 8, 2013 at 9:13 am By:

SETH’S PICK :: LOST CAT HC:  I’ll admit that my first cursory assessments of the works of Norwegian cartoonist Jason weren’t favorable. I didn’t initially see the brilliant storytelling behind the deceptively simple artwork.  Had I actually sat down to read some of his works, I would’ve seen the greatness sooner.  Now I’m happy to say that I’ve read just about everything  by this cartoonist, and am always excited when he releases a new book.  Jason is widely regarded for his shorter works, so the real selling point of Lost Cat is that it’s a lengthy 160 page story.  It has the trappings of a detective story, but will certainly have some of the pathos and characterization that set Jason’s work apart from others. It should also be noted that this book was translated by the late Kim Thompson.  Kim did many great things for comics over the course of his life, but his translations of works by Jason are among my favorite of his contributions.  Thanks to him, numerous works from talented European cartoonists were introduced to an American audience, and that will resonate among cartoonists in this country for decades to come.  If you missed Craig Fischer’s fine remembrance of Kim on the Heroes Blog a few weeks ago, I’d encourage you to check it out HERE

STAFF PICKS :: SCIENCE FICTION GN :: JULY 03, 2013

July 3, 2013 at 1:00 pm By:

JUSTIN’S PICK :: SCIENCE FICTION GN: I’ll admit, I have a certain weakness for offbeat curiosities like this. But the premise sounds interesting, and the art has an early Clowes, Tommaso-esque vibe that is certainly appealing. A high school teacher is inexplicably drawn to some B-grade sci-fi fare, which in turn activates repressed memories concerning an alien abduction in his youth. Whether played as a straight narrative or an exploration of the obsessive loneliness that accompanies modern adulthood, this is a story that has a lot of potential, both good and bad.

STAFF PICKS :: CATALYST COMIX #1 :: JULY 03, 2013

July 3, 2013 at 8:39 am By:

RICO’S PICK :: CATALYST COMIX #1: For this relaunch of Dark Horse’s superhero anthology the company has gone with a formula similar to what worked so well for Image Comics’ Prophet. I love the creative team they’ve assembled and I hope the book finds it’s audience because this is just the type of thing that people complain about not being able to find on the shelves. Here it is people, Joe Casey writing superheroes drawn by Dan McDaid, Paul Maybury, Ulises Farinas, and Rafael Grampá! Weird action awaits!
