Please give a warm welcome back to Ming Doyle! Ming combines science fiction, super powers and sports in her new miniseries Mara (with Brian Wood) and we are happy she is returning to HeroesCon this year!

Tom Fleming is a talented painter who has worked on titles such as KULLElektraVampirellaHeavy MetalMagic: The Gathering and many more!

Artist Tom Lyle is also returning to HeroesCon 2013.  Tom has illustrated numerous books like Spider-manRobin,Punisher and Batman.  He’s also an instructor at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)!

Mark McHaley began his career when he was just 19 years old and since then he has illustrated for countless companies. Recently has done a wide array of sketch cards including DC Universe: Legacy, Indiana Jones: Heritage, Star Wars Galaxy 5 and Lord of the Rings: Masterpieces II. Check out his website for more!

Joe Quinones is well, I’m just going to let the beautiful Captain Marvel cover below do the talking. Geez Joe!

Robbi Rodriguez has self published 2 volumes of his acid western comic Frankie Get Your Gun and is working on the 3rd now. His first comics work was 2004’s Hero Camp followed by Image titles which include Night Club, 24seven vol.2 and Hazed. He also illustrated Stephen Colbert’s Tek Jansen and the Harvey nominated series Maintenance, published by Oni Press. Look for his new monthly series Collider from Vertigo later this year!

Tony Shasteen was the illustrator behind the Burn Notice graphic novel for DC Comics and USA Network, the Talisman graphic novel, co-written by Stephen King and Peter Straub, and 12 Gauge/Image Comic’s The Occult Crimes Taskforce (the O.C.T.), co-created by David Atchison and Rosario Dawson.

Tim Townsend pleased our eyes with his immaculate inks on Chris Bachalo’s Wolverine and the X-Men art in 2012 and this year he’s on Marvels big re-launch of Uncanny X-Men with Bendis and Bachalo. He’s been inking Marvel Comics for 20 years, stop by and wish him a happy anniversary!

Maris Wicks wowed us a few years ago with her beautiful Yes, Let’s comic and has continued to show that she is comfortable with all aspects of comic storytelling. From doing covers for Bravest Warriors and Adventure Time to writing scripts for Spongebob Comics. Check out her blog for more great drawings of your favorite superheroes as you’ve never seen them before!
Kubert School grad Thom Zahler’s Love and Capes series is a fan favorite. He has won awards for both his graphic design and illustration work. He is also a recurring presence on Cleveland broadcast media, both television and radio. He recently made the jump to the national spotlight as a contestant on the syndicated version of “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” where he won $32,000. He could have gone farther, but he didn’t know who the heck Charles Goren was.

JUSTIN’S PICK :: X-MEN LEGACY #4 : Si Spurrier and Jorge Molina heat things up this issue, finally bringing Legion face-to-face with some honest-to-God X-Men. Blindspot has lead Wolverine and company to Tokyo, where David Haller has made protégés of twin Yakuza mutant orphans. Classic superhero misunderstanding fight sure to ensue. But Legion’s mental state is still fractious; anything could happen. Pick it up and find out what. (ed- Also, Mike Del Mundo’s covers are bonkers! -rico)

STAFF PICKS :: GIL KANE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ARTIST’S EDITION ::

January 7, 2013 at 9:26 am By:

JASON’S PICK :: GIL KANE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ARTIST’S EDITION: IDW’s Artist Edition series has been nothing short of incredible for fans who enjoy poring over the details in the art of the comics we love. Let’s be honest; this is the closest most of us will ever come to owning original art from some classic comics. Last year’s John Romita Artist Edition was a real treat for Spider-Man fans, and I’m just as excited about this second trip to the Spidey well, this time featuring the art of Gil Kane. Artwork from some seminal issues have been reprinted in all their marked-up, pasted-up, original glory here, including the introduction of Morbius, the six-armed Spider-Man, the non-Comics Code-approved drug abuse issues, and – most importantly – the death of Gwen Stacy. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

CHARLOTTE MINICON UPDATE :: DOOR PRIZES AND MORE!

January 4, 2013 at 4:26 pm By:

If  you’ve been to the Charlotte MiniCon before, you know we always have cool door prizes that any attendee can win.  Sometimes, though, Shelton throws some especially exciting and valuable items into the mix.  This year is a prime example of that.  Along with passes to HeroesCon, t-shirts, prints, and some of the other awesome items you might be expecting, this year’s door prizes include some highly sought after books like those pictured above.

Look closely and you’ll see copies of the San Diego Comic Con variant for Walking Dead #87, and a variety of covers for the now sold out Amazing Spider-man #700, including the regular cover, variants by Olivier Coipel and Marcos Martin, and even a copy of the super hard to find Steve Ditko variant.  If you look on ebay right now, the Ditko variant has been selling for between $800 and $1200.  That’s right, Shelton’s offering up a $1000 comic book as a door prize this year!  That should give you an idea of how much fun Charlotte MiniCon will be this year.

Remember to “Like” us on Facebook and then register for your FREE Mini-Con pass! Print your pass and bring it to the convention to speed your entry into the con. All attendees will receive a door prize ticket upon entry. Amazing door prizes will be given away all throughout the day, so get in early and stay all day! You never know when your number might be called!

Charlotte MiniCon is Sunday, January 20, 2013 at The Grady Cole Center from 11am to 5pm. There is plenty of free parking!

STAFF PICKS :: PROBLEMATIC: SKETCHBOOK DRAWINGS 2004-2012 :: JANUARY 9, 2013

January 4, 2013 at 11:12 am By:

SETH’S PICK :: PROBLEMATIC: SKETCHBOOK DRAWINGS 2004-2012: I could have justifiably written about the start of artist James Harren’s new B.P.R.D. series (subtitled The Abyss of Time), or Tom Kaczynski’s Beta Testing the Apocalypse – fans of indie, political or analogy-filled comics should give this one a look.  However, I saw Fantagraphics’ preview of this new sketchbook from Frank artist Jim Woodring, and it quickly jumped to the top of my buy pile.  If you know Woodring, you know he’s a master of imaginative, bizarre, often wordless comics.  What I didn’t know, was that Woodring fills up Moleskine sketchbooks on a monthly basis.  Everything from stream of conscious excursions, life drawings, crazy new character designs and loose thumbnails find their way into Woodring’s sketchbooks.  Admittedly, this book might be best suited for the process hounds among us, but Woodring’s eclectic art is well worth seeking out for the uninitiated as well.

STAFF PICKS :: COMPLETE PERSEPOLIS :: SATRAPI SIGNED BOOKPLATE EDITION :: JANUARY 02, 2013

January 2, 2013 at 8:29 am By:

ANDY’S PICK :: COMPLETE PERSEPOLIS SATRAPI SGN BOOKPLATE ED TP:
This important groundbreaking two-volume memoir of the author’s young life in Iran before, during and after the Islamic Revolution is essential reading.  The writer/artist Marjane Satrapi uses her cute and cartoony art style to weave a unique tapestry that includes scenes of high tension and tragedy, but also reminds the reader that there is always hope as long as the human spirit endures.
Is Persepolis a masterpiece? Since its original publication, readers have been torn–especially since the first part of the narrative is so powerful, it tends to dwarf the coming-of-age atmosphere of the latter chapters.  But at the end of the day– it belongs on everyone’s must-read list.  And this brand new edition–that collects both volumes and is limited to 400 signed bookplate editions signed by creator Marjane Satrapi at only at 24.95 makes it hard to pass up!!

STAFF PICKS :: 47 RONIN #2 :: JANUARY 02, 2013

January 1, 2013 at 1:41 pm By:

JUSTIN’S PICK :: 47 RONIN #2 : “To know the 47 Ronin is to know Japan.” The national legend gets lovingly translated to comics by Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson and Usagi Yojimbo auteur Stan Sakai. The pairing is pitch perfect for the subject matter, and the resultant book is a great historical retelling for readers of all ages.

STAFF PICKS :: ADVENTURE TIME FIONNA & CAKE #01 :: JANUARY 02, 2013

January 1, 2013 at 9:41 am By:

RICO’S PICK :: ADVENTURE TIME: FIONNA & CAKE #01: Natasha Allegri, who works on TV’s Adventure Time, is writing AND drawing this 6-issue series starring the characters she created for the show. I’m a huge fan of Fionna and Cake and Natasha’s Tumblr is just about one of the funniest things you can see on the internet. So I’m not really sticking my neck out when I say this series is going to be great! And check out that sweet, sweet cover by my pals Joe Quinones & Maris Wicks!!
