HEROESCON UPDATE :: APRIL 2, 2021

April 02, 2021 By: Karla Southern Category: DISCUSS, EVENTS, Exhibitors, Feast Your Eyes, Guest List, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Looking Ahead, NEWS, Now Read This!, Schedule, Uncategorized

HC2020-UPDATE

June 2022 will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Heroes Convention!

You know that after TWO YEARS of pandemic handcuffs, we will pull out ALL THE STOPS and make HeroesCon 2022 one FOR THE AGES!

“A June bug flew from the warmth he once knew,
And I wished for once I weren’t right,
Why we used to laugh together,
And we’d dance to any old song,”
From “Far From Me” by John Prine

The past several months have seen us all stuck in LIMBO, quietly watching COVID-19 numbers rise and fall as restrictions fluctuate across the country, never knowing what the next month might hold.

It is after careful consideration for the HEALTH and SAFETY of EVERYONE, we have made the decision to FAST FORWARD directly to HeroesCon 2022.

ALL 2020/2021 HeroesCon Tickets, Artist Alley Tables and Exhibitor Booth Reservations will automatically transfer to the 2022 Heroes Convention at this time.
We hope that you will continue to support us as we begin planning our 40th Anniversary show.

HeroesCon 2022 Hotel Rates will be made available as soon as 2022 show dates have been finalized.

We are currently looking at the possibility of holding a much smaller convention in the fall, but we know that a smaller show is no substitute for the Heroes Convention.
Details of this show are tentative at this time, with announcements to follow as soon as possible. HOWEVER, if you have purchased a 2020 or 2021 3-Day Pass for the Heroes Convention, your ticket will get you into this smaller show, as well as the 2022 Heroes Convention.

Please know that we have not made this decision lightly.

After what has felt like an eternity of uncertainty, we are hopeful that there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines are being distributed on a wide spectrum and we are slowly starting to see the promise of a return to “normal” in the months ahead.

However, even with the increased numbers of vaccinations, we understand that it may not be safe to hold an indoor gathering of thousands of people, even three months from now; especially when you consider that the vast majority of our guests travel from across the country, or even from across the globe.

We PRIDE ourselves on the wealth of talent that fills our Artist Alley each year.

At the beginning of March we sent out a poll to over 300 Featured Guests from recent and past Heroes Conventions. Of the 200+ responses we have received, 95% of those have stated that they would not feel comfortable attending a show in June of 2021, with most adding that they would prefer to wait until 2022 to attend a convention.

This, coupled with feedback from customers and exhibitors, has informed us that June 2021 is still too soon for most to feel safe attending a convention on the scale of the HeroesCon. We have taken all of these concerns very seriously, and agree that the health of EVERYONE is the MOST IMPORTANT factor going forward.

Other extenuating circumstances that have influenced our decision at this time: the Charlotte Convention Center will be undergoing construction that could impact our floor plan as well as the use of escalators. As of today, enforced capacity restrictions will remain in effect until fall of 2021, with limited on-site concessions, and sustained social distancing requirements between individuals as well as between tables and booths.

Under these circumstances it just wouldn’t be a HeroesCon.

“Ain’t it funny how an old broken bottle,
Looks just like a diamond ring,
But it’s far, far from me.”
From “Far From Me” by John Prine 1971

We appreciate you and your continued support,
and we THANK YOU for being a part of the
HEROESCON FAMILY.

Be well, stay safe, and look out for one another. -Heroes

The Heroes Family Remembers One Of Our Own

December 14, 2020 By: Karla Southern Category: Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, NEWS, Uncategorized

Charles Kibby = Hero Extraordinaire

Kibby with Seth and Sergio 2019-crop

Charles Kibby with Heroes’ Seth Peagler and Sergio AragonĂŠs at the 2019 Heroes Convention.

What can’t we say about this treasure of a human being?

Charles Kibby was a Gentle-Giant, a big lovable Ginger Teddy-Bear, and a BELOVED member of the Heroes Family.

With his intimidating stature, he could have easily have been a holy-terror…and yet, he was the sweetest, kindest, most generous soul.

It was an HONOR to have him serve as a volunteer during the Heroes Convention each year, as well as at most all of our other Heroes events.
He was a regular presence at the Charlotte Mini-Con, Free Comic Book Day, and at nearly ALL of our In-Store Signings.
He could handle ANY situation thrown at him with a calming charm.

Kibby’s was the kind of presence that automatically made everyone feel at ease.
During stressful events he would kindly remind members of the Heroes Staff to take a break, and if he received protest, would occasionally throw them over his shoulder to MAKE them eat lunch.
He was a friend to almost EVERY ARTIST and VENDOR on our show floor, as well as at other shows across the country, constantly checking in on them during shows. Kibby would happily go well out of his way to help ANYONE, and you always knew you could count of him.

He was ALWAYS looking out FOR OTHERS.
To know him, was to LOVE him. And, like many others have stated, once he knew you he immediately made you feel like family.

The Heroes Family, and the Comics Community at large, are devastated today by the news that he lost his battle with COVID-19.

We know that everyone is tired of hearing this, but PLEASE WEAR A MASK.
Kibby wore his. He was careful. Our friend got sick because of someone else’s negligence.
If you won’t wear a mask for your own health, please wear one for the sake of someone you love.

We LOVE YOU CHARLES KIBBY.
You are, and ALWAYS WILL BE, Heroes Family.

A GO FUND ME page to benefit Kibby’s family can be found here:

#BLACKLIVESMATTER

June 09, 2020 By: Karla Southern Category: Feast Your Eyes, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, NEWS, Now Read This!, Opinion, Uncategorized, Where Do I Start?

BLM

Heroes stand for Justice, and Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find stands with the BIPOC Community and the #BlackLiveMatter movement.

We must live by the code of the heroes whose stories we carry in our store, and stand for what is RIGHT.

Captain America fought the Nazis. The X-Men, Black Panther, and countless other titles throughout the years, have represented the fight for civil rights.

In December of 1968, Stan Lee, the father of Marvel Comics, used his Soapbox to declare, “Racism and bigotry are among the deadliest social ills plaguing the world today.”

Stan Lee Racism Soapbox

A few months earlier, in October 1968 his Soapbox stated, “We believe that Man has a divine destiny, and an awesome responsibility – the responsibility of treating all who share this wondrous world of ours with tolerance and respect – judging each fellow human on his own merit, regardless of race, creed, or color.”

We look forward to a new chapter written by a new world where diversity and inclusivity are not just fictional characters on a page, but a reality for all who live it.

We stand with you.

HEROES CONVENTION UPDATE 4/24/2020 :: LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021

April 24, 2020 By: Karla Southern Category: EVENTS, Exhibitors, Feast Your Eyes, Guest List, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find, HeroesCon, HeroesCon News, Indie Island, Looking Ahead, NEWS, Now Read This!, This Just In

HC2020-UPDATE

To Our Treasured Attendees, Artists, Guests and Members of the Heroes Convention Family,

As of Thursday, April 23, 2020, the State of North Carolina has extended the “Stay-At-Home” order effective until Friday, May 8, 2020.

Guidelines for the gradual reopening of our State have been laid out in three phases, which at this time suggest that any mass gathering of more than 10,000 would be incredibly unlikely by June of 2020.

In light of these developments and the current unprecedented and unpredictable nature of the 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, and with the best interest of everyone’s health and financial wellbeing in mind, we have made the difficult decision to bypass a 2020 Heroes Convention in favor of fast-forwarding our focus to our 39th Anniversary show to be held June 18-20, 2021.

This decision is not made lightly, and is made with the careful consideration for everyone’s safety at heart.

It would be reckless and irresponsible of us to expect our attendees, vendors, legendary creators, and our valued supporters to put themselves at risk by traveling at this time. It would also be irresponsible of us to presume that our vendors and artists would see positive sales during this time of economic uncertainty. We are hopeful that by giving as much notice as possible, our attendees and artists may be able to avoid costly airline reservations and may be able to alter any current travel arrangements without penalty.

Out of respect for an already crowded and uncertain convention schedule going into late 2020, we have decided to shift our focus forward to our June 2021 Heroes Convention versus attempting to reschedule for later this year.

Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention are, at their core, a small business with a big heart, operating year-round from our brick-and-mortar comic-book store in Charlotte, NC. Our store, as well as the Heroes Convention, are managed by a team of four full-time employees, six part-time employees, and a small group of dedicated volunteers. We keep our store and convention operations running simultaneously during the months leading up to our convention, as well as during the event itself.

Normally, at this time of the year, we would be deep into HeroesCon preparation with most of our daily finances from the store being dedicated to producing the best Heroes Convention possible.

Since Monday, March 23 (which also happens to be Shelton’s birthday), our store has been closed to the public. We are currently maintaining and surviving based solely on telephone and online sales from our loyal customer base. While we are endlessly appreciative of these sales, this change in our daily operation has affected not only our finances but the time which would otherwise be dedicated to organizing the Heroes Convention. Even if the country were able to open without guidelines and restrictions in the next week, the time left for us to produce a Heroes Convention on par with our standards would be insufficient.

We are not receiving a refund from the Charlotte Convention Center, we are transferring our deposits from 2020 toward a 2021 show. Putting on a show the size and scope of the Heroes Convention is extremely expensive. All the money we have received from the purchase of 3-Day Advance Tickets, Artist Alley Tables and Exhibitor Booths is currently tied up in the cost of renting the Charlotte Convention Center, our decorator, and several other items that facilitate the show each year.

We understand that everyone is experiencing hardships at this time, and we are no different. All 3-Day Advance Tickets, Artist Alley Tables and Exhibitor Booth Reservations for the 2020 Heroes Convention will automatically transfer to our June 18-20, 2021 show. Requests for refunds will be addressed on a case-by-case basis as soon as possible, but will need to be postponed until the country, and our store, have reopened and finances have stabilized. We will do our best to issue refunds if necessary, but it will take us time to do so. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

We look forward to hosting an incredible Heroes Convention in 2021 with a Guest List for the record books! We hope that you will join us next June 18-20! In the meantime, we ask that you stay safe, stay well, and stay home until it is safe for everyone!

We appreciate each and every one of you.

Sincerely,
The Staff of Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention
